Mr. Yaowa said that writing the last “Finale” track was cathartic and allowed him to reassert himself as a person.

“I like a song, it’s not a verse, it’s actually one long verse, but the joint I did on my Brick album called ‘Finale’ is one of the joints that’s therapeutic to me. It means a lot to me. I put a lot of me on that track for the people to know but also for me to remind myself of who I am, where I come from, what I’ve been through and how much things could be worse. I find happiness to be momentary a lot. It’s really momentary. There’s glimpses of happiness. Like, I’ve never fully been happy all day, every day. I don’t know what that feels like. It’s so up and down in life. I cherish those moments where I’m happy a lot more because of the saddened, poverty stricken early life I had. And that song, ‘Finale,’ I touch on a lot of that stuff. So it means a lot to me. That verse really means a lot to me. And the fact I can touch on some of the most touchy subjects of my life and share it, it was one of the moments where I knew that this voice I have is what I’m supposed to have.” (Soul Culture)

With happier times following the track’s ’07 release, Ortiz and the rest of Slaughterhouse group recently inked a deal with Eminem’s Shady Records.

“It just feels good to put lyricism in the forefront again, in my eyes,” Ortiz explains within the feature. “Some of my heroes, when I came up rhymin’, were Biggie Smalls, Big L–rest in peace to all these–Big Pun. Dudes who were passionate about the way they put words together, the message they sent when they rhymed, and just bein’ ill with the pen. And I feel like this group, and Yelawolf and [Eminem], are dudes who stand for that. And it’s good to see the pure form gettin’ shine again.” (XXL Mag)

Prior to signing with Shady, Ortiz spoke on the importance of real lyricism and his respect toward Eminem.

“We’re right now in talks with Shady Records and we are going back and forth with some legal stuff,” Joell explained in a video. “Yes, we will be signing to Shady. Is it finalized now? No it’s not but it is in the workings. Eminem is excited, the group is excited so you can really expect a Slaughterhouse release with Shady Records. I’m excited about that because shoot, being a dude that came up listening to real lyricism, real emcees, Mr. Marshall Mathers is one of the top notch there. You understand? And for him to show interest in myself and my group, it’s just a beautiful thing and a blessing. I’m looking forward to that just as much as you — the answer to your question, ‘Are we going to sign to Shady,’ is yes we are and it’s in the workings right now so be on the look-out.” (Hip Hop Nation)

Keeping his pen hand strong, Ortiz recently revealed his involvement on Dr. Dre‘s forthcoming Detox album.

“I wrote on Detox, got some money from that and he’s a great business guy,” Joell said about Dre in an interview with DJ Envy. “He’s been working on Detox for a number of years now so I know I haven’t heard everything. He gave me ten beats, I sent him 20-something. He did select two joints so that was a blessing.” (“Sucker Free”)
