As we head into 2011, SOHH recently reached out to Slaughterhouse's Joe Budden to get the scoop on his direction for the new year.

Budden feels that reaching age 30 last August helped him learn from the experiences of his past ten years.

“I don’t really want to say [turning] 30 is what’s doing it, I kind of use it as a marker, as a cursor,” Budden told SOHH. “I think that people change everyday and this decade I’ve been putting music out, I’ve seen a lot, heard a lot, I’ve learned a lot. And I just think it’s time to start applying some of these things and start acting wiser. [It’s time to start] making better decisions, being smarter, having better judgements and just start exercising being a better person in general. I think when you practice that it starts to reflect and that’s how I felt [my latest album] Mood Muzik 4 turned out. I was practicing better decision-making.” (SOHH)

In October, Budden said turning 30 gave him a different outlook on life.

“I’m not caught up in record sales, expensive cars, luxury vehicles and big mansions. I’m not caught up in all these material things and things some people put more value in than their worth…It’s a revelation. You wake up, have an epiphany and that’s pretty much it. There’s no big story here if that’s what you’re looking for. You learn, grow and mature and come to a certain point. I’m 30 so this is where I’m at in my 30’s as opposed to where I am in my 20’s.” (XXL Mag)

Last April, married producer Swizz Beatz reflected on how turning 31 impacted his life.

With no plans to slow down, he maintains this next year as a rebirth of his old self. “Part of the graduation stage is dumbing-down the toys a little bit. You gotta understand, I was doing these things since I was 17, 18 years old, and I’m 31 now. If you are doing the same things in your 30s that you were doing in your teens, something’s not right,” says Swizz with a chuckle. And it’s clear that things have changed. Gone are the extravagant cars and necklaces decked with diamonds, and in their place is a grown man with a clear vision for the future. He is determined to put a tangible feeling back into music, and with his new album in the works, this is his moment. “Music is something that should stick with you and represent a moment in time. I need to raise the bar for that. I need to personally take the risk to make those sounds and take those elements where everyone is over there, but Swizz is over here.” (Haute Living)

Earlier this year, Grammy-winning rapper Eminem talked about achieveing maturity in his late 30’s.

“There was so much [drug-based] stuff like that off [Relapse] that I felt like I was starting to run it into the ground. I think consciously I went in a different direction with [Recovery],” explained Eminem. “Anything I’ve ever said, I certainly was feeling at the time. But I think I’ve calmed down a bit. My overall look on things is a lot more mature than it used to be.” (New York Times)
