Jermaine Dupri’s Departure From Island Def Jam Confirmed

Rumors of hip-hop mogul Jermaine Dupri being removed from Island Def Jam as president have now been confirmed.

The rumors of JD’s ousting began to spread last summer, which caused the label to release a statement.

“There is absolutely no truth to the rumors regarding Jermaine Dupri,” Def Jam executive Laura Swanson wrote in an exclusive statement. “They are completely untrue.” (SOHH)

Then news broke out on blogs early yesterday morning (January 8) citing under performance as a possible reason for JD’s removal.

I had already heard that Mr. Dupri’s position had been compromised at the legendary label over poor artist decisions. Since JD came on as Executive Vice President of Urban for IDJ he hasn’t had much success. (Gyant Scoop)

The renowned producer’s departure has now been confirmed.

The tenure of the Atlanta rapper-producer-mogul, which began Feb. 7, 2007, came to an abrupt halt Thursday. It is believed there is still time remaining on his contract with the Universal Music Group imprint. (Variety)

JD was officially appointed nearly two years ago by record executive AntonioL.A.Reid.

As part of the arrangement, Mr. Dupri will oversee Island’s entire urban music operation. In addition, he will produce artists on the IDJ roster, as well as provide his production services to the entire Universal Music Group family of labels. (Def Jam statement)
