Jermaine Dupri Speaks On Exit From Island Def Jam, “I Never Got A Chance To Put Records Out”

Jermaine Dupri has come forward to address the recent removal from Island Def Jam and why his departure from the label won’t be the end for him.

Reports of the hip-hop mogul’s removal were confirmed last Thursday (January 8).

The tenure of the Atlanta rapper-producer-mogul, which began Feb. 7, 2007, came to an abrupt halt Thursday. It is believed there is still time remaining on his contract with the Universal Music Group imprint. (Variety)

Despite the decision, no explanations were immediately released by JD or the label which caused widespread speculation.

Personally, I’m disappointed that the ‘mogul’ is choosing to not address the ousting. I mean hell, he had to see it coming. Stevie Wonder saw this happening. The hit making producer hasn’t faired too well as an executive for the fleeting record label. Out of all the artists he’s signed, Anthony Hamilton was the only artist JD successfully sold to consumers. (Gyant Scoop)

JD has now addressed the rumors surrounding his exit.

“Island [Def Jam Records] is going to say what makes them look good. They are not going to tell the truth and say, ‘He just stopped dealing with us on a daily basis.’ If you don’t put out my records, that’s all I have as a person. I’m a record person, so if I give you a record and you don’t put it out, then basically you’re showing me that it’s really no business. I never got a chance to put the records out. I had Johnta Austin, Ninth Ward and Dontria. I read the blogs and I’m thinking, How can they say that I’m not putting out records when anyone who knows my track record knows I’m about making music?”

“Many of the people at the label; if their bosses were to fire them today, they don’t have anything else to do. Their lives are over. I’m not that dude. Life ain’t over for me.” (Essence Magazine)
