Rap mogul Jay Z is out to prove to the world his Roc Nation management empire is bigger than hip-hop by signing indie rock singer Grimes to its growing roster.
According to reports, Grimes’s addition to the team became official this week.
Grimes, indie rock’s pop star, has signed a management deal with Roc Nation, the label announced today. Roc Nation, under the stewardship of Jay Z, manages a number of artists from across the musical spectrum including rappers (Meek Mill, Wale), producers (DJ Mustard, Ludwig Goransson, No ID, Timbaland), engineers (Kuk Harrell, Rob Kinelski) and songwriters (Shea Taylor, BOOTS). The label also manages a number of acts from outside the worlds of hip-hop and major label pop, like M.I.A., Matthew Dear and Haim. Grimes is expected to release her fourth solo album–and first since her 2012 breakthrough Visions–in 2014. (Complex)
Along with re-tweeting Roc Nation’s announcement, Grimes posted a photo of herself throwing up Jay Z’s infamous dynasty sign.
“Excited to welcome @grimezsz to the Roc Nation family! Watch the Grimes-directed video for her song “Genesis” here: http://bit.ly/GenesisGrimes,” she re-tweeted December 17.

Recently, Atlanta rapper Jeezy made headlines for joining Jigga’s growing Roc Nation team.
It appears that Jeezy has aligned himself and possibly his CTE imprint with Roc Nation. Jeezy took a picture with Jay Z, with the caption reading: “It’s Official Now. CTE x Roc Nation x It’s Tha World.” As of now, details of the deal have not been revealed. In the past week, Jeezy has expressed frustration with his own label situation at Def Jam Records. He has threatened to provide fans with “an early X-Mas present” if the situation doesn’t change. Meanwhile, Jeezy’s CTE World label has previously been under Atlantic Records. (Complex)
Last October, Roc Nation singer Melanie Fiona called Young Hov a top adviser and reflected on being one of the first artists to sign.
“It was pretty crazy! I was actually one of their first signees. When they approached me about management, they set up a meeting. I had no idea that Jay Z would actually be in the meeting, so it was nerve racking and exciting all at the same. Having his support as a manager and as an artist is pretty cool, in business and as far a street credibility goes! He’s brilliant and having him as a resource for advice is definitely helpful along the creative path. Soon after I signed to them, Jay picked me as the face of the Rocawear Women’s line. They put a massive billboard of me from the campaign right in the middle of Times Square! Crazy!” (The Coveteur)
