NBA star and Roc Nation Sports stude Kevin Durant is going to leave energy drink Gatorade crossed up as reports claim he will not seek a new contract with the company.
According to reports, one of the key faces of Gatorade’s new generation is ending their run together.
Gatorade spokesperson and all-around nice dude Kevin Durant will cease his partnership with the sports drink popularized by His Airness, Michael Jordan, reports ESPN Sports Business Insider Darren Rovell. As Rovell notes on Twitter, Durant’s contract with Gatorade ends next week, and it will not be renewed. Gatorade is not commenting on future dicussions about their dealings with the 3-time NBA scoring champ. “Kevin Durant’s deal with Gatorade will expire next week and will not be renewed. Gatorade not commenting on future discussions.” Durant starred in a series of commercials for Gatorade with the Miami Heat’s Dwyane Wade where both are shown having nightmares of each one-upping the other on the court. Coincidentally, Durant and fellow Gatorade spokesperson Dwyane Wade sparked a short-lived social media feud a few days ago which made people think it may have been a publicity stunt.
Many suspected the beef between Kevin Durant and Dwyane Wade that was manifested over social media this week was just a promotion for Gatorade. After all, the two were featured in a commercial for the sports beverage last year. Now there seems to be definitive proof that this issue had nothing to do with Gatorade. ESPN’s Darren Rovell reported on Friday that Durant’s deal with Gatorade will expire next week and not be renewed. He also says the deal expiring has nothing to do with Durant’s issues with Wade. Earlier this year, KD said his Oklahoma City Thunder fans did not need to worry about Jay Z trying to lure him to another basketball team by signing him to Roc Nation Sports.
“He has nothing to do with if I’m going to leave OKC or none of that. I heard that before, so put that out on the table. He has nothing to do with that. He knows his lane with me. Their team knows their lane with me. And they’re letting me handle the basketball part. I would tell fans not to worry about that at all.” (The Oklahoman)
Durant also recently spoke on his unexpected decision to make Jay an official business partner.
“It just seemed like a perfect move to me, something that there’s no risk in doing,” Durant told ESPN.com’s Darren Rovell in a “SportsCenter” interview. “Jay-Z is someone who is a guy who is well-respected in the business area, a guy that has done so well for himself and his brand. I’m looking forward to partnering with him and learning as much as I can from him.” (ESPN)
Back in June, Durant made sure to formally show the world he was officially a part of Roc Nation Sports.
The Thunder star Instagrams his signing with Roc Nation Sports. It’s official: Kevin Durant is the newest member of the Roc Nation family. The Oklahoma City Thunder superstar posted a photo on his Instagram account of himself and Jay-Z signing the paperwork to make his agency change official. Durant is just the latest member of an impressive roster of clients Jay-Z has built up since jumping into the agency game, which includes Robinson Cano and Geno Smith. (USA Today)
