Rap mogul Jay-Z may have made his rounds at various media outlets over the past week, however, an upcoming interview shows Jigga in a slightly different, more serious light.
A new 90-second teaser Jay interview surfaced online over the weekend.
“You just want to be normal. You want to be human. You want to be able to go to the store and walk outside with your child,” Jay says in the teaser. “The fact that they even fought me in bringing new revenue streams into the music business is amazing to me. It’s amazing to me. It’s like, why? Time is like a man-made concept, right? So you can do whatever you want with it. Why am I not getting this sort of service? What are you doing? What have you done this week? Those questions are going to start coming. It’s not about you, it’s about the people.” (BBC Radio 1)
If all goes accordingly, Jay fans will be able to peep the entire intimate session on Monday (July 15).
This should be intriguing. On Monday at 7PM (GMT), BBC Radio 1?s own Zane Lowe will be airing a special four part interview with Jay-Z about Magna Carta Holy Grail. While Hov has already hit Hot 97, Power 105.1, Twitter, AND The Met, this interview feels like it will be a bit more candid than the rest. Just Zane and Hov, at Abbey Road, apparently speaking on everything from “being normal” and being fought on “new revenue streams” being brought into the music business to time being a “man-made concept.” Heavy. Jay kept busy earlier in the week with a recorded six-hour music video performance.
The hoopla surrounding Jay-Z’s latest album Magna Carta Holy Grail continued yesterday as the rapper performed his song “Picasso Baby” for six hours straight at New York’s Pace Gallery. Part of the rapper’s music video shoot, the performance was an homage of sorts to performance artist Marina Abramovic, whose 2010 installation “The Artist Is Present” saw her spending 736 hours in one-on-one encounters with MoMA visitors. Jay-Z’s performance was not as long, though the rapper did get in the faces of delighted onlookers, as well as a celeb or two. (Prefix Mag)
The unexpected event immediately sparked a slew of viral videos and photos.
Unlike at most video shoots, Jay-Z’s label reps allowed the audience to keep their mobile phones. The internet is full of amateur photos, clips and Vines from the event, and Fader obtained a copy of the official invitation. Based on Fader’s report, the crowd was intended as a “cross-section of the New York art and cultural world”, including important figures from the gallery and sales side of fine art. It’s a fitting concept for the song Picasso Baby, which includes lyrical shout-outs not just to Picasso, but also Mark Rothko, Jeff Koons, Francis Bacon, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol and the Mona Lisa. In his recent Twitter Q&A, Jay-Z said he was planning to release “six pieces of art” to accompany his new album: this video, directed by Mark Romanek, is presumably the first. (The Guardian)
