Roc Nation CEO Jay-Z has finally come clean on why a rumored Roc-A-Fella Records offer to Lil Wayne never materialized and detailed his relationship with Weezy's boss Baby.
According to Jigga, Cash Money immediately shut down the opportunity to give up Wayne after he contacted Baby about the possible move in the mid-2000’s.
“The truth is, this is the first time I’ve ever told this truth — I had a meeting with Wayne, I had a relationship with Baby, so, when I used to go to New Orleans, I would hang out with him,” Jay explained in an interview. “I felt it was only right to call him. I called him out of respect like, ‘Yo, I was talking to Wayne. I’m just letting you know, boom-boom-boom.’ So after that, I think we received a letter at our office for like torturous interference from a lawyer and I was like, ‘Whoa.’ It was like, ‘Whoa,’ and it all went from there. I would rather lose that situation and do the right thing than the opposite ’cause I think I could have signed him and then told them after. But I did the right thing and I’m cool with that decision.” (“The Breakfast Club”)
Back in 2006, Wayne defended his decision to stick to Cash Money instead of going to the Roc.
“I won’t front it was very tough,” Lil Wayne continued. “I grew up from when I was eight [years old] until I got my deal when I was 11 [with Cash Money]. I started writing when I was 8 and from 8 to 11 Cash Money was Rocafella, Def Jam, all of them in one. I got with them at 11 and I couldn’t believe it. So from 15, In My Lifetime, Vol. 1 to Reasonable Doubt, all that, I was like that’s the dude. Then he built his team and who don’t want to be down? You could hate all you want, but I know you want to be down.” Despite his admiration for Jay-Z, Weezy knew that he was a star himself as well and shouldn’t be impressed into making a decision about his future. “I had to sit down and think, I knew that I was of stature too,” said Wayne. “I haven’t made my mark yet, I haven’t met that time period yet. I have a lot put in, but when I met [Jay-Z’s] mark, I’ll have a lot more put in and I know that I could probably build something bigger and better, but all off of his blueprint though because he’s the best.” (RapFix)
On Jay’s new “La Familia” track, he appears to take a jab at Wayne.
Jay-Z is out for blood on “La Familia,” the latest lyrics to be released via the rapper’s Samsung app. On the short, two-verse track, Hov addresses Roc Nation Sports being probed by the NFL, as well as an investigation by the FBI. His most controversial bars on the new song however, are seemingly aimed at Lil’ Wayne. Back in 2011, Weezy spat a threat to kidnap Beyoncé on the track “It’s Good” on his Tha Carter IV album. Defending Birdman against Jay-Z’s “Baby money” line on Watch The Throne’s “H.A.M.,” Wayne fired back with: “Talkin’ ’bout baby money, I got your baby money/Kidnap your bitch, Get that ‘how much you love your lady?’ money.” Now, on “La Familia,” Jay-Z reveals that Lil Wayne’s threat did not go unnoticed. He jabs back with the lyrics “Wanna kidnap wifey/ Good luck with that bruh/ You must gonna hide your whole family/ What you think we wearing black for.” (VIBE)
A couple years ago, Jay said he did not take a diss from Wayne seriously.
Jay-Z told us he didn’t want to dwell on the topic, especially considering the education fundraiser was about a positive cause. But he didn’t have much to say about Wayne’s “It’s Good,” other than that it was to be expected in hip-hop. “That’s sport, that’s rap music,” Jay said. “Nothing is going to change but the participants. I don’t even see why that’s news.” (MTV)
