Rap mogul Jay-Z, Kanye West, Young Jeezy and a slew of other hip-hop artists are reportedly uniting to boycott performing in Florida in light of the state’s publicized “Stand Your Ground” law.
Started by music icon Stevie Wonder earlier this month, the number of artists getting involved has reportedly sprouted overnight.
Artists joining Wonder reportedly include Rod Stewart, Madonna, Usher, and Justin Timberlake. Rappers Jay Z, Kanye West, Trey Songz, Young Jeezy and Wale have also signed on to the boycott threat, as have pop acts like R. Kelly, Rihanna, and Alicia Keys. Wonder announced his intended boycott the day after a Florida jury acquitted George Zimmerman of second-degree murder charges stemming from the death of Trayvon Martin. “I decided today that until the ‘stand your ground’ law is abolished in Florida, I will never perform there again,” he said. “As a matter of fact, wherever I find that law exists, I will not perform in that state or in that part of the world.” (The Hill)

The “Stand Your Ground” law received widespread recognition following Zimmerman’s recent acquittal.
The “stand your ground” self-defense laws in Florida and two dozen other states allow individuals to defend themselves without requiring them to attempt to evade or retreat from a dangerous situation. Although Zimmerman did not specifically employ a “stand your ground” law defense to combat second-degree murder charges in the killing of Florida teen Trayvon Martin, the trial has brought a renewed scrutiny to the statutes.” (The Hill)
Earlier this month, a Facebook page urging people not to support select Florida-based companies launched.
“Florida’s “Stand Your Ground Law” killed Trayvon Martin’s opportunity for justice. Stand Your Ground must be repealed and corporations based in Florida that profit from our patronage must stand with us against Stand Your Ground or we will make them pay in their pockets. Economic embargos and boycotts have worked to debilitate America’s unjust laws like Jim Crow and alienate and starve countries like Cuba. A focused, targeted and public economic embargo of Florida-based corporations will force them to take a stand against Stand Your Ground in their own interests, The following post list the top Florida-based corporations who rely upon your patronage and support.” (Boycott Florida)
