Grammy-winning rapper T.I. is not stopping his grand music hustle by detailing plans to possibly link up with fellow Atlanta emcee B.o.B. for a project tentatively titled The Man & the Martian.
Tip partially credits recent joint efforts by rap duos like Jay-Z and Kanye West for inspiring the possible LP.
“We been goin’ in. We’re actually flirting with the idea of doin’ an album together called The Man and the Martian,” T.I. explained. “We just been compiling material, he and I together, and it’s coming out real good…Of course [Jay and Ye] did inspire me, but I always have wanted to do a collaborative album. Even back when Jay did that with R. Kelly — I spoke to Usher about doing one of those before; the stars and the moon hadn’t aligned appropriately.” (“Sway in the Morning”)
In August, Jay-Z opened up about the motivation behind the joint Watch the Throne album.
“It’s just protecting the music and the culture, like, it’s people that’s in the forefront of the music,” Jay told radio host Lorenzo Thomas. “It’s like, ‘Watch the throne,’ protect it. You just watch how popular music shift and how hip-hop has basically replaced rock n roll as the youth music. The same thing could happen to hip-hop. It could be replaced by other forms of music. So it’s just like making sure we’re putting that effort in making the best product, so we can contend with all these other music. With all dance music that’s dominating the charts right now, indie music that’s dominating the festivals and still holding off rock n roll. Just to hold our place and make sure — the hip-hop culture is still the most dominant form of music around the world.” (99 Jamz)
Last year, B.o.B. talked about getting career advice from T.I.
“He told me, ‘Alright B.o.B, you are on roller coaster now. From this point on everything is going to speed up and you will never know how you got here,'” B.o.B. said in an interview. “He told me about finding my pace because I’m just getting my feet wet. It’s crazy. Me being on Grand Hustle, being affiliated with T.I., being an underground alternative artist with a pop hit the next day. It’s f*cking crazy. The Adventures of Bobby Ray is just a soundtrack to what I’m doing. I’m just enjoying the ride… The ups and downs is what make the rollercoaster ride fun. But everything is weird [Laughs].” (VIBE)
While The Man and the Martian is not yet a definite go, Tip is working on a follow-up to last year’s No Mercy solo LP.
“The first of two album titles I’m debating is Kill the King because in all that I’ve gone through I’ve observed how people respond to my circumstances, and I always wonder ‘Why y’all coming at me like this?’ But I thought, ‘How do you expect them to act?'” he explains. “Life is a game of chess and the object is to kill the king. If you anoint yourself king, you have made yourself a target. The second one is self-explanatory – Trouble.” Keen on reclaiming his Southern hip-hop crown, T.I. has little patience for skeptics who believe his star has dimmed. (Rolling Stone)
