Hip-Hop veteran Jay-Z is reportedly one of the latest artists to be turned down for a collaboration with renowned singer Sade.

According to Sade, she feels too pressured to collaborate with other artists.

In a new interview with the Los Angeles Times, Sade reveals that Jay-Z and other MCs have approached her about rapping over her beats or having her sing the hook on their records, but she has politely declined. “I’m too scared,” she tells writer Nelson George. “They’ll find me out. It’s like The Wizard of Oz. They’ll find out there’s nothing there. As for collaborations, I’m collaborating with the band and do what we do. I see myself as a member of this band who does these songs that we write.” If you’re one of the lucky few who does get a sample cleared, Sade says it won’t cost you much. “When it comes to sample clearances, I’m probably the cheapest chick in the west,” she muses. Earlier this year, Sade opened up about rapper Drake reportedly trying to collaborate with her.

“I don’t think they have contacted me,” she explained in an interview. “I’ve never collaborated because I’ve always avoided working outside my safety zone — I can be exactly who I am and can fail or success within the moment. I feel safe working like I do. I wouldn’t want to work in a situation where I am expected to deliver because I think I wouldn’t deliver.” (National Post)

Following the snub, Drake said he was still hopeful of a future collabo.

“That’s great. Her brand is always protected. That’s why,” Drake said of her comments in an interview. “Other people’s visuals, other people’s songs, stepping outside your zone can jeopardize your brand. It can bring you down as opposed to bring you up. I personally feel we could have done something amazing. But I don’t think she really knows who I am, really, my genre of music. I put it out there. It was more of a hopeful thing. It was a very early stage where I was at when I said that I was hoping. One day. Maybe after this album comes out. I’m very influenced by her. She does something that I do. She doesn’t do too much with harmonies, and she keeps her vocals very clean. Single vocals. Haunting melodies. I’m influenced by her a lot. One day.” (MTV)

Despite limited guest features, Sade recently shared her admiration toward urban artists like Alicia Keys and Raekwon.

“I love Alicia Keys,” Sade said in an interview. “I like some of the tracks off Rihanna‘s new album. I like some more heavy rappers like Raekwon’s album from the Wu-Tang Clan. I listen to just about anything that speaks to me.” (“Tom Joyner Morning Show”)
