J. Cole Says Let Him In: “The White Boys Got To Open The Door For Black People”

Roc Nation's J. Cole recently offered his take on today's mainstream music getting played on the radio and why songs like "Crooked Smile" deserve more nationwide attention.

In Cole’s opinion, Caucasian artists like Macklemore give hope to his tunes receiving more radio airplay.

” [“Crooked Smile”] deserves to be the number one record in the country. I think Macklemore’s “Thrift Shop” gave me hope for a song like this. I think he kinda… as weird as it is, and it’s always happens like this, the White boys got to open the door for Black people at White radio. It happened with Elvis, Eminem, Justin Timberlake, Robin Thicke, and now hopefully Macklemore with a song like “Thrift Shop” can allow “Crooked Smile” to get its proper shine at Pop Radio, Cole tells Missinfo.tv. “Honestly, you can’t name me many songs better than… I don’t mean to sound crazy, but better than “Power Trip” as singles. They should have gave it a chance at Pop radio. All these Pop PDs weren’t giving rap a chance at all.” (Miss Info TV)

Coincidentally, Macklemore leads this upcoming weekend’s MTV Video Music Awards with six nominations.

The 2013 MTV Video Music Award nominations are finally here! The network took to social media early this morning to announce the nods on their Vine and Instagram accounts. Justin Timberlake and duo Macklemore and Ryan Lewis lead this year’s nomination list with six each! Bruno Mars is up for four moon men. Miley Cyrus, Pink, Robin Thicke, and 30 Seconds to Mars are all up for three. The award show will take place on Sunday (August 25) at Brooklyn’s Barclay’s Center, which will air live from MTV. Recently, Cole shared his thoughts on the state of hip-hop.

“It’s heading into another golden era. It might not be there just yet, but it’s getting there. Look at the options you got right now. I remember around the time Hip Hop Is Dead was coming out, I knew why you was saying it. Rap was a f*cking joke. It was a singles-driven market. But even when I was unsigned, I knew with what I was doing that this was gon’ turn around. I didn’t know at the same time that Kendrick was somewhere studying, going hard. Drake was somewhere studying, going hard.” (VIBE)

The North Carolina emcee also noted a new standard has developed in hip-hop.

“N*ggas is getting back to caring about rapping again. And really taking this sh*t seriously, clowning n*ggas that’s wack. There’s a real divided line of n*ggas that can rap and n*ggas that just can’t. And you can get your money and it’s all good. We still respect you and we gon’ play your song. But when you look at these guys, way different.” (VIBE)
