“I Was Scared To Go To L.A. After Listening To Them”

Written By S. Samuel

[Each week, SOHH asks two entertainment personalities to name their Top 5 rappers of all-time. To make things tricky, we've created a "Hall of Fame" of emcees (see right) who are universally respected and therefore may not be mentioned. After Eddie Griffin let loose his top picks earlier this week, fellow comedian Jo Koy lets out his fave five.]

  • p-nwa.jpgN.W.A. That was my life growing up, that was my genre, that was my era. They changed hip-hop for me. Don’t get me wrong, I liked the East Coast artists but man, when N.W.A. came into the scene? It was a whole ‘nother f*cking level. I couldn’t believe how real the sh*t was. Even I was scared to go to L.A. after listening to N.W.A. I didn’t even know about weed until Snoop Dogg came into the scene.

  • p-snoop-dogg.jpgSnoop Dogg. That’s my boy. 20 years in the game and he’s not in the Hall of Fame? You’ve got to be f*cking kidding me. He’s still relevant in the game.

  • p-too-short.jpgToo Short. That was that dude. When I was a kid, whenever you heard a Too Short record, you knew it was him. He always had those catch phrases, “Beeeeeeecccch.” He always stayed true, had that signature flow and he never changed. That was the dude right there. He’s still hot. He just has that voice that cuts right through.

  • bone-thugs-2011-11-09-50-65.jpgBone Thugs-N-Harmony. I love them because they introduced me to that fast rap style. That hit me in the f*cking face when I heard it. That quick flow was hot but they also sang their verses. They were on some other sh*t. I couldn’t get enough of them.

  • sir-mix-a-lot-2012-04-26-50-65.jpgSir Mix-A-Lot. A lot of people don’t know about Sir Mix-A-Lot but he’s an independent dude, no label, blew himself up. He had other sh*t before “I like big butts.” He had a bunch of underground sh*t that went platinum and it went nationwide. You have to give it up to a dude that wrote a record in his garage and just blew up.
