Mobb Deep's Prodigy has given his opinion on the state of hip-hop and why he initially predicted rap star Rick Ross would be a one-hit wonder.

According to P, Rozay’s consistency has helped keep him afloat at releasing quality music.

“[Rap’s] in a good place man. Any time you’ve got a whole bunch of competitors it only steps up the quality of the sh*t that’s out there…Yeah. I like [Ross’] sh*t,” P said in an interview. “At first, I thought Rick Ross was a fluke to tell you the truth, because when I first heard him I was like ‘Who the f*ck is this dude man? Come on. You can’t be serious. This dude is a fluke. One-hit wonder’. After a while he started proving himself. Then I started seeing consistency with him, and more and more, I was like ‘Hold up. Ok, I’m starting to respect this dude now.’ Now he’s proved me wrong. He’s not what I thought he was. That happens a lot. A lot of people won’t talk about it though.” (Complex)

P also weighed in on the comparison of Ross to the late Notorious B.I.G.

“I guess because he’s a big, heavy-set, fat dude or whatever,” Prodigy added. “Like, I don’t know man. They talk about flashy things. I don’t really know. That’s the only comparison I see, is their weight. Lyrically Rick Ross is spitting some sh*t right now, but I mean, compared to Biggie there’s just no comparison. You can’t compare Biggie, nobody’s Tupac. Those people are them, you’re you. I don’t really do that comparison sh*t. Be yourself.” (Complex)

While locked up in 2009, P called out Ross through a collection a leaked letters.

“Now it’s the slavery of our minds covertly,” P writes. “There’s people out there who get the chills when they hear Rick Ross, like he’s something special. These are the kind of fools we’re dealing with…I was just reading Vibe Magazine’s ‘Best Rapper Alive 2008’ article…Vibe says 920,000 people voted for it. I would personally b*tch slap all 920,000 of these voters if given the opportunity.” (Hip Hop Stan)

Dipset’s Jim Jones recently spoke to SOHH about working with P since he was released from a three-year jail bid last month.

“I got Prodigy on my new Capo album,” Jones told SOHH. “Me and P have already been in the studio. He came in the studio and didn’t leave until 7:30 AM [yesterday] morning. He was doing his thing. He looks good. Prodigy looks like he got his weight up, he’s in shape and it looks like he’s got his mind right. He looks like he’s been reading his books in there, the raps are on point, the flow is good, shouts to P. RSV-P and all that. Prodigy, P, you heard me?” (SOHH)
