Behind the decision, Berg said he believes B’s initiative holds weight especially in the hip-hop genre.

“A lot of people are scared to do that,” says Yung Berg. “I think that Lil B stands for what a lot of people are scared of. They’re scared of somebody with a voice and an opinion that really doesn’t give a f*ck about what somebody else thinks about them…With the whole ‘I’m Gay’ situation, I understand it 100 percent. People give too much power to words. So if he jumps out there and it’s a positive thing and says, ‘Yo, I’m gay, and we’re gonna take the definition away from the word and unify it to all people,’ then I’m with that. That’s some next-level sh*t right there.” (Billboard)

Soulja Boy views B’s album title as a monumental move.

“I flew the f*ck out my seat, bro,” Soulja Boy said when asked about his initial reaction to the title. “Then you know what I did? I really thought back to what he said. He said, ‘bro, I’m going to be a human sacrifice, I’m going be the first rapper to do this sh*t. I’m going to show people that words don’t mean nothing. When the first time somebody picked on me in school or picked on somebody else in school like ‘you’re gay’ or ‘you’re a b*tch? You know what I’m going to flip this sh*t, and I’m going to call myself a b*tch and call myself gay, and I’m still going to get money.’ And that’s real, I support in everything.” (VIBE)

Earlier in the week, New York rapper Talib Kweli admitted his mixed feelings toward the project.

“Immediately (upon hearing the hubbub) I’m like [now’ that’s a f*ckin’ social experiment, if I’ve ever heard one,” Kweli said. “Look I don’t care who you sleep with at the end of the day. I don’t care if Lil B’s gay or not. It doesn’t change my life in any way, but for him to name his album I’m Gay, issues such a challenge to his fans. I’m not sure if it’s brilliant or not, but what he did with that, in one fell swoop, was challenge every single bandwagon fan. Like are you really down with me or not. And me as an artist, I have no choice but to respect that.” (XXL Mag)

Since publicly announcing the title at last week’s Coachella music festival, B has encountered extreme criticism.

“People been hitting me up like, ‘I’m gonna bash your head in,’ ‘you f—-t,’ ‘I’m gonna kill you,’ ” Lil B said in an interview. “I’m not gonna stop and I’m not scared of anybody on earth. That’s why I [titled the album I’m Gay] and nobody gonna stop me…I’m very gay, but I love women. I’m not attracted to men in any way. I’ve never been attracted to a man in my life. But yes I am gay, I’m so happy. I’m a gay, heterosexual male.” (MTV)
