[Noted producer and DJ RJD2 recently sat down with hip-hop personality Shawn Setaro on his popular podcast The Cipher. Listen to the full interview and check out five gems RJ dropped during the Q&A.]

On why he has it easy compared to pop singers who are aiming towards stardom.

“Guys like me, we never really had a shot at Top 40-dom. We were just nerds making beats. And we still are.”

On why you’ll never hear his often-licensed music in a tobacco ad.

“How do you put a dollar figured on contributing to even one person being a lifelong smoker?”

On his surprising reaction to the overwhelmingly positive reviews of his debut album Deadringer.

“It’s very, very easy to get invested in the idea of being a critical darling. I remember feeling incredibly burdened with that – really, really stressed. Mentally, [I went through] dark times right after that first record came out.”

On how his time at a fancy private school made him able to tell peoples’ class status at a glance.

“This might sound silly, but I felt like I could read on somebody’s complexion [if they came from money]. It was almost like they breathed different air or something.”

On the ending of Mad Men (which used his “A Beautiful Mine” as its opening theme):

“I’m not sad to see it end, in all honesty. That’s the natural trajectory of shows like that. I feel like the lame way to go is to try to milk a show like that into an infinite number of seasons.”
