To make things tricky, we've created a "Hall of Fame" of emcees (see right) who are universally respected and therefore may not be mentioned. After Bobby V dished out his top picks, late rapper Big L's brother Donald Phinazee names his fave five.]

Big L. I have to name Big L. He was the greatest. For all of the lyrics that he put together, they were serious.

Leaders of the New School. The way they put it together and the way Busta Rhymes came out with them is serious. Busta Rhymes. That’s one of the greatest.

Kanye West. I’m feeling Kanye. I like how he puts things together because he keeps it real. He goes commercial but he also keeps it real.

Naughty By Nature. They were just smooth with it. They made songs that just hit everybody and everybody liked them. They set trends.

Lil Wayne. I’m definitely feeling that boy. Lil Wayne switches it up. And he just keeps it raw with it.
