“He Was One Of The Greatest Storytellers”

[Each week, SOHH asks two entertainment personalities to name their Top 5 rappers of all-time. To make things tricky, we’ve created a “Hall of Fame” of emcees (see right) who are universally respected and therefore may not be mentioned. After Torion Sellers unveiled his fave five last week, Onyx’s Sticky Fingaz brings out his top picks.]

onyx-2012-09-07-50x65.jpgOnyx. It might not be a complete list, but you know I can’t even see doing a list like that without putting myself on it. If I can’t put myself on there, I gotta at least put my group on there–Onyx–as a whole. I would definitely say Onyx.

donny-hathaway-2012-09-07-50x65.jpgDonny Hathaway. I’m listening to different genres of music. It’s not all about hip-hop. I would say Donny Hathaway. He would be my No. 2. He’s my favorite male singer. He’s not around anymore–he is– but not physical in form.

aretha-franklin-2012-09-07-50x65.jpgAretha Franklin. And No. 3 [would be] his counterpart, Aretha Franklin.

xi-2012-09-07-50x65.jpgX1. He’s also not with us anymore. His name was X1. He was almost like the 5th member of Onyx, and I say him– not just to talk about no other rappers and big him up and da-da-da-da-da-da– it’s because I really think he was one of the nicest people in the planet besides myself. I would definitely say X1 is No. 4.

p-slick-rick.jpgSlick Rick. And No. 5… that’s a tough one. You know what, back in the day on this one particular album– because this album helped birth Sticky Fingaz as well, people might not know that– but Slick Rick. [His album] The Great Adventures of Slick Rick. He was one of the greatest storytellers, and if you see my movie A Day In The Life [you’ll know] the whole entire movie is in rap. So, I took pieces from [Rick], and even on my first solo album, Black Trash: The Autobiography of Kirk Jones. The pieces are from The Art of Storytelling. You know, so yeah.
