“He Personifies New York City [Rap]”

Written By S. Samuel

[Each week, SOHH asks two entertainment personalities to name their Top 5 rappers of all-time. To make things tricky, we've created a "Hall of Fame" of emcees (see right) who are universally respected and therefore may not be mentioned. After Ben J dished out his fave five, Evitan's Jarobi quests into his top picks.]

  • mf-doom.jpgMF Doom. He embodies this genre of people that I consider myself a part of. He represents the nerdy hood dudes. We grew up in the hood and I got good grades in school. I read comic books and watched television. It’s that type of sh*t.

  • p-wu-tang-clan.jpgGhostface Killah. Ghostface personifies New York City [rap]. It’s everything from his flow to his rhyming to his delivery to his storytelling ability. He’s on the modern day Slick Rick storytelling level.

  • p-epmd.jpgEPMD. I put them in there because they totally broke off and went into their own lanes back in the days. Their records were hot, they brought us Redman, Das EFX and all of those other groups. Erick Sermon on production was bananas. That was my sh*t.

  • p-redman.jpgRedman. I’m going back to the Whut? Thee Album Redman. Plus he put out Dare Iz A Darkside, Muddy Waters, all of those joints. Those are all classics. He’s another person who totally made his own lane out of nowhere. Redman was the man. His flows were crazy, delivery and his humor too.

  • p-the-lox.jpgThe LOX. Jadakiss is another flow-sick rapper who personifies New York. All of [the rappers I’ve mentioned] are very technically sound and they deliver in any category you can think of.
