West Coast rapper Game and Miguel have applauded seemingly overnight rap heavyweight Kendrick Lamar for rising above the masses and nearly leading next month's Grammy Awards ceremony.

Game fully rode behind Kendrick’s buzz-stealing nominations dominance and said he viewed him as family.

Compton’s own Game was psyched for his hometown kid made good also. “Man I’m so proud of that dude,” Game said. “That’s my little homie. It’s just good to see him getting his just do. He deserves everything he’s getting. Congrats to Kendrick for everything, it’s beautiful. And welcome to the Million Dollar Club.” (MTV)

In Miguel’s opinion, K. Dot entered the rap game and paved his own lane.

“Kendrick is not following in anyone’s footsteps. He’s on his own path and he’s killing it, as you can see. I think I just appreciate how he told his story,” Miguel told MTV News after the nominations were announced. “He really let people get to know him through his music and that’s why he’s winning.” Of course K-Dot is an amazing MC and his lyrical game is top notch, but for Miguel it’s also the emotion behind those verses that really put Lamar over the top. “There’s an authenticity and that’s what I appreciate most from him,” Miguel said. “It’s what he told with his craft.” (MTV)

Although rap mogul Jay Z leads all nominees, Lamar does not trail far behind with seven nods.

Jay Z easily led Grammy Award nominations announced Friday with nine, but left-of-center rappers Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Kendrick Lamar were among a group of new stars who took many of the major nominations. Macklemore and Lewis’ gay marriage anthem ”Same Love” was among song of the year nominees and the Seattle rap crew joined Los Angeles rapper Lamar with seven nominations apiece, including best album and best new artist of the year. Pharrell Williams had four major nominations among his seven and Justin Timberlake also had seven. (Boston)

Jay Z and Kendrick will both face some serious contenders for “Rap Album of the Year.”

Competition is stiff in the rap categories, with the biggest names in the game — Jay Z, Kanye West, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, Kendrick Lamar and Drake — battling for best rap album. Also worth noting: that two of the album of the year nominees are also rap albums, Lamar’s Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City and Macklemore’s The Heist. (The Hollywood Reporter)
