Former Bad Boy Records artist Trevell "G. Dep" Coleman has explained his decision to confess to a murder dating back to the 1990's and facing life behind bars.
Speaking from jail, Dep did not realize he was confessing to a murder.
Apparently when Trevell Coleman, AKA rapper G-Dep, came clean to police about shooting a man in the chest in 1993, he may not have known that he was confessing to killing a guy. He told the Post in a jailhouse interview, “I was surprised — for some reason, I really didn’t think that he died. When they told me, I was like, ‘Oh, I’m not going home after this.'” He has now been charged with murder, and faces life in prison. Coleman says he didn’t think much of the shooting at the time, but “started to wonder if all the bad things that happened to me in my life were karma for what I did…I thought that if I turned myself in, it might give me closure.” So despite the objections of his mother and his girlfriend, he told the police. Now he says, “The only thing I regret is that I have to leave my kids.” (Gothamist)

Wednesday night, after years of living with the burden, Coleman, 36, walked into the 25th Precinct and shockingly confessed to the very cold case, the sources said. The career criminal — once signed to superstar rap mogul Shawn “Diddy” Combs’ record label — was just 18 when he fatally shot a Queens man outside an East Harlem housing project in 1993, police sources said. “I shot and killed someone 17 years ago,” Coleman told a cop in the station house. As Coleman continued to reveal more details of the Oct. 19, 1993, murder of John Henkel outside the James Weldon Johnson Houses — things only the killer would know — the officer reached out to investigators at the 23rd Precinct, where the crime took place. Additional reporting claimed Dep has remained in police custody since his confession.
As a result of his actions, Diddy’s one-time signee was charged with murder and held without bail. “My client is presumed innocent, and the case is going to grand jury,” said Coleman’slawyer, Michael Alperstein. G. Dep is a career criminal, having been arrested more than 25 times since 2003 on various charges including burglary, grand larceny and drugs. Earlier this year, the ‘Child of the Ghetto’ creator announced his return to the rap gamewith his sophomore album, ‘Ghetto Legend.’ (The Boom Box)
Last year, Dep opened up about his departure off Diddy‘s Bad Boy label.
“The death in my family, that was kinda when I really let it all go,” Dep revealed in an interview with Ms. Drama. “I’m definitely trying to get a [label] situation, this is what I do. Before Bad Boy, I always did music…I haven’t spoke to Black Rob in a while. Last conversation we had, we wrote each other…I’m day-to-day, like, it’s really like, I’m really like struggling, you know what I’m saying? I just rely on positive thinking — right now, I got royalties and shows, whatever shows…It wasn’t really no bad feelings before then. Just one day, I came to the studio and Puff was like ‘Yo, it’s highway time.’ At that time, people had to be let go from the label, he had to make room for Loon, he had to cut off loose ends and I was just one of ’em.” (Ms. Drama TV)
