Bad Boy Records rapper French Montana has dished out how big of a Versace fan he is and why its his duty to carry on the brand in the same footsteps as Notorious B.I.G., Diddy and Jay-Z.
Montana said he credits early hip-hop icons for getting him obsessed with Versace.
“As soon as my money got right enough to buy Versace [laughs]. I have been a fan of Versace for so long, watching people like Biggie, Puff, Jay-Z. I’ve been collecting them for a while now,” he said in an interview when asked how long he has been a Versace enthusiast. “Rappers make something hip-hop. Like when Biggie wore the yellow one, the one that I wore for Summer Jam, he made it hip-hop. And when he wore the Coogi sweater, he made that hip-hop. Whatever rappers wear is cool to people. I like colorful stuff. I like wearing stuff that nobody is wearing. That’s why I wear the bear hat. I’ll wear the whole mink. You wear the animal, but you don’t wear the head. I’m wearing the head this time around. It’s just like how I took the silk shirt game to another level and went and got the scarves–looked like King Jaffe Joffer out there. You know?” (GQ)
The “Shot Caller” hitmaker also gave an attempt to offer advice for any Versace-buying amateurs.
“I give the best advice and buy dumb sh*t. Like somebody will make money and they’ll be like, “Yo, man. I don’t know what to do.” I’ll be like, “Man, go buy some real estate.” Go open up a liquor store because everybody loves to drink. Then I turn around and buy a Rolls Royce Ghost. I just want to spend $30,000 at Versace. I just bought a Maserati. (laughs)” (GQ)
Renowned Italian fashion designer Donatella Versace spoke on the late Notorious B.I.G.’s love for the line prior to his 1997 passing.
“I think Biggie was amazing. He came to my shows in Paris many times, and we’d see each other often. He always used to talk so nicely about my family. I think he was so smart, so intelligent. He had such a mind. So I loved what he was doing and how he was giving people a way to know about Versace–I do think he was giving people a way to know about Versace–I do think a lot of people started to know about Versace because of him.” (The FADER)
Young Money’s Nicki Minaj previously spoke on B.I.G. and hip-hop’s love for the iconic clothing line.
“We can remember Biggie Smalls talking about Versace,” Nicki, dressed in a multicolor beaded pantsuit topped with a palm-frond accented wig, told us about the late Bad Boy MC. “It’s something that as a little girl, growing up in hip-hop, you never really think you’ll get a chance to — I never thought I’d get to model for Versace, you know what I mean?” (MTV)
