Newly signed Bad Boy Records rapper French Montana may have music mogul Diddy as a boss these days but he claims the fans are responsible for choosing his club bangers.
According to French, his decision to let the fans dictate singles has paid off.
French recently chatted with XXLMag.com about the effective method which he credits with gaining him more popularity these days. “I think it’s because the way I do my thing now,” French says. “I changed my format. I don’t pick songs no more. I put out a mixtape [and] the most requested song, I go with that one.” French can use the extra input being that he’s been extra busy lately. Besides signing to Bad Boy, he just dropped his Lockout mixtape which is a joint effort with Waka Flocka Flame. And, oh yeah, he finally debuted the video for his break out single “Shot Caller” featuring his friend Charlie Rock on the hook. (XXL Mag)
Last week, the Bronx, New York rapper announced his new alignment with Bad Boy.
“I really feel real good that’s why I kept it here in New York,” French explained. “Why would I take my talent to South Beach? When I met with Puff and sat down and really spoke, he told me a couple of things and [he] never lied to me about nothing and always kept his word. It is what it is. It’s New York. I want to bring it back to New York.” (“106 & Park”)
In late November, reports claimed Montana quietly inked a deal with Puff’s label.
I’ve heard from a few sources that Diddy has managed to sign French Montana to Bad Boy records. I was skeptical at first but that was followed by Diddy being on the, “Shot Caller,” remix. I also heard it may be a joint venture with Bad Boy Records and MMG. Would this be a good move for French? (Real Talk NY)
A few days ago, Diddy mapped out Bad Boy’s 2012 takeover with plans to put out music from Montana, Red Cafe and Machine Gun Kelly.
“It’s a new game out here. You’ve got to really hit that road and really put that work in,” Diddy told radio host Funkmaster Flex. “We invented the hard work, the grind and I think all of these artists I’ve signed, they’ve come to my attention from being on the road and touching the fans and building they fan base. They all play at the sold-out crowds right now. … Right now we’re in set-up mode. Red Cafe is slated, he’s up first. And we’re immediately going after the [French Montana] ‘Shot Caller’ music video today on BET — ‘Wild Boy’ is out there. That’s Machine Gun Kelly’s record with Waka Flocka. We premiered that joint [on ‘106 & Park’] and the success and how long it takes for those records to break, get out there and make sure the names, the project and the energy gets out there, that kind of dictates when the album’s drop but we’re going to continuously be dropping music and keeping our foots on their necks. No mercy.” (Hot 97)
