According to the sports icon, pressure and chatter from the Twitterverse ultimately inspired him to respond to Lamar’s bars.

“Well that’s the wonderful world of Twitter,” Jackson said in an interview when asked about his now-infamous response. “It is. That’s where you can communicate with people that are completely out of your, you know, your range of influence and your social grouping. But the connection between basketball and rap is so deep that many of the people that tweet back and forth to me were saying, ‘You gotta come back at Lamar after he gives you this [line.]’ I read the mentions on that, I was in a down phase in Montana, obviously, and I was looking for some social communication and so I threw that out there and of course, that was a hot line to get a buzz.” (“The Seth Davis Show”)

Swift and to the point, the 11-time NBA champion revealed his reaction via Twitter in mid-August.

“@PhilJackson11 how you feel about @kendricklamar name dropping you on his track?,” Jackson retweeted.

“@kendricklamar it’s okay to be cocky and sure, but we all need somebody to lean on. Let’s just call it mentoring.,” Jackson tweeted August 13 referring to Lamar’s “If Phil Jackson came back, still no coachin’ me/I’m uncoachable, I’m unsociable” line. (Phil Jackson’s Twitter)

Former Los Angeles Laker Metta World Peace also spoke on Lamar’s gritty verse over the summer.

“Kendrick will win by a landslide is my prediction if NY don’t step up. But you can’t depend on radio because its all foreign.”

“This is the type of music I have been waiting for… This will be The battle of independents vs majors.. That’s what this is really about!!”

“I love HipHop!!!!” (Metta World Peace’s Twitter)

During a recent “Chelsea Lately” interview, K. Dot revealed his childhood dream to become the next Michael Jordan and how his “Control” lyrics could be seen in the same vain as NBA stars sparring.

“Nah, nah, a lot of the cats I named, they’re actually good friends of mine and I basically wanted to show that I’m competitive,” Lamar told host Chelsea Handler. “When you get out on that sport, get out on that basketball court and you’re playing — before music, I wanted to be Michael Jordan. No, seriously. But like you said, I’m a small guy, I only grew to like 5’6 and it deferred my dreams to actually writing rhymes and I pinned it somewhere else. I have a lot of insight on hooping, whether you know it or not. I know looks may be deceiving. … [I’m saying I’m a really good rapper] in a competitive nature, the same way basketball would be on the court. Kobe [Bryant] versus LeBron [James]. I’m sure they’re good friends off the court. But when you’re in that booth, you have to be able to annihilate whoever’s out there. That keeps the level of hip-hop alive as far as the culture.” (“Chelsea Lately”)
