Ex-Cash Money Artist’s Producers Want $$$, Go After Baby’s Empire

Former Cash Money Records artist Jay Sean's producers have taken legal action against music mogul Birdman's company for unpaid work.

According to reports, production company Orange Factory Music are seeking payments for contributions to 2009’s All or Nothing album.

The lawsuit was filed by Orange Factory Music … which claims it had a deal with Cash Money to produce Sean’s huge 2009 single, “Down” — and seven other songs. The producers say it took 2 years before they finally saw a check — for just $211K. They say they continued to get royalty statements for hundreds of thousands of dollars, but never got a check. Orange Factory is going after Cash Money, not Sean — for at least $1 million. (TMZ)

Despite the perception, Sean recently said he had no ill will for the Cash Money team after announcing his departure a few weeks ago.

Sean only has kind words for his former label. “I had and still maintain a great relationship with Slim and Baby [CEOs of Cash Money],” he tells Billboard. “They believed in me and my talent and our partnership obviously garnered a lot of pop success.” But Sean wants to go in a different direction artistically. “It got to the point where I was chasing pop success and ‘the smash’ when really my heart wasn’t in it anymore,” he says. “That’s not why I got into this game.” (Cash Money is the second label that Jay Sean has left — he was on Virgin Records for a spell during the ’00s.) Last year, Sean talked to SOHH about his love for the YMCMB family.

“Just look at who all is out right now with Nicki Minaj, Drake and Lil Wayne plus Tyga. You just have all of these cats that are just hitting the scene and consistently killing the scene. Cash Money has an eye for talent and artists who know who they are. Drake is Drake. Lil Wayne is Lil Wayne. Nicki Minaj is Nicki Minaj. Tyga is Tyga. We all do what we do and we all do it brilliantly. We all have our own specific sound and our own specific style and our own craft.” (SOHH)

The R&B stud also reflected on his early days at Cash Money.

“I know when they signed me, they were like, “Yo, we see what this guy is doing. He’s killing it internationally. He’s got fan bases around the world yet he was not a big name yet here in America. We want him here in America.” That’s what Cash Money was very smart for. They also saw that I knew who I was and what lane I made. I did make my own lane and even though up until now I’ve been their pop side of the label, they’ve never really had that before they signed me. I think that’s one of the most amazing things. When I talked to Baby, I just remember thinking how street smart that was. He’s like, “Yo, Jay, man, you do you. Keep on doing what you do because that’s worked for you and it’s going to keep working for you.”” (SOHH)
