Despite his rap-themed 2004 debut, M.I.A.M.I., Pitbull said he takes pride in maturing and gaining a larger fanbase, as heard by the records on his new Planet Pit album.

“I think from M.I.A.M.I. to Planet Pit, how it transitions, what it shows is maturity, growth, evolution, someone that’s been learning, applying, observing,” Pitbull explained in an interview. “As far as getting acceptance from hip-hop, does it bother me? In no way shape or form — I’ve been on tracks with the best or what they consider the best. I’ve been on tracks with Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, Fat Joe. … On those tracks, I think I definitely held my own and everybody respects me for the simple fact that I’ve created my own lane.” (MTV)

Last December, Fat Joe paid props to Pitbull but admitted that he couldn’t see himself going pop.

“I’m inspired because I’m all over the world. I love Flo Rida and all of them but I won’t make that kind of music. I’ll make some party music but it’ll be more like urban party music, ‘Lean Back’ and ‘Make It Rain.’ Rather than straight pop. Once again, I love Pitbull, Flo Rida and the music they make but some artists can’t really be respected if they take that lane. There’s one thing to be featured on a hot song like that and do it yourself. When reggaeton got hot the record labels would [be] offering me stupid money to make a Spanish reggae tone album. I featured on a song or two from some people I respected but that’s as far as I would go. ” (Global Grind)

In October, soulful singer Erykah Badu slammed hip-hop artists for going pop.

“How y’all gone stand by and let our music turn into pop techno cornball a** music. We don’t own our music no more. Come to think of it, did we EVER own it? when I say own our music , I’m not talkin bout the artist I’m talkin bout the people … let me be quiet. I wanna hear from the young people? easy for me to complain about this techno-pop cause i have a taste for something else. but how do u feel? These rappers ought to be shame of they d*mn selves, I’m talkin bout the mc’ s rappin over this pop techno music. I believe in pimpin the system but got D*MN! not like this #pop-technosongs.” (Underground Charizma)

To date, Pitbull’s new Planet Pit has remained on the sales chart since debuting in June.

Miami rapper Pitbull’s Planet Pit slipped out of the Top 10 moving down seven slots to No. 14 with 28,400. After two weeks in stores, his new LP has sold 83,400 records. (SOHH Sales Wrap)
