According to Grey, Gaga was already slated to appear on the record’s final version.

Along with Dre, Skylar has Eminem to thank for her continued success, even going to bat for her when she penned the hook to “I Need a Doctor” and the label attempted to swap her vocals for Lady Gaga’s. “Somebody in the room suggested we get Lady Gaga to sing the hook on ‘I Need a Doctor’ and [Eminem] stood up for me and said no, because he wanted to keep my voice on the song,” she says. “That was a big thing for me because had I not kept my voice on ‘I Need a Doctor,’ who knows where I’d be right now.” She continues, “After the Grammy Awards performance of that song, alot of things changed for me. It really changed my life. It provided a great platform for me, and I’m forever grateful for Eminem and Dr. Dre.” Skylar revealed that she had 6500 more Twitter followers in the immediate minutes that followed that fateful Grammy performance. In February, Em talked about their “I Need A Doctor” collaboration.

“My whole career, especially in the beginning but even still to this day, is always to try to get a reaction out of Dre,” Eminem said in an interview. “The reaction I wanted, was to spark him even more than he’s been sparked lately, you know what I’m saying? Even push it further and just get him to finish the album…The car crash I think is just metaphorically speaking, feels like Dre’s been in a coma, and like me and hip-hop are trying to wake him up out of his coma.” (Extra)

Dre also stressed the significance “I Need A Doctor” had on him.

“It almost felt like this song and this video was the rebirth of something,” Dre said. “Maybe the rebirth of me, going to whatever the future holds for me…It’s weird because that’s how I started feeling last night during the making of this video, kind of feeling the rehabilitation and everything. It just really feels that way.” (Extra)

Their music video officially premiered in the winter.

Full of images from Dre’s early days with N.W.A., it metaphorically imagines the life, death and rebirth of the elder statesman of West Coast hip-hop. “I Need a Doctor” begins with Dre standing atop a cliff, staring out at an ocean Inception-style, before cutting to fleeting, impressionistic snapshots of his earlier videos, spanning from N.W.A. to his Death Row days up to the Aftermath era with his protégé Eminem. After Dre endures a horrific car crash and finds himself on life support, Eminem raps about how he’d never have made it without the Good Doctor’s help and guidance. At one point, Dre even seems to appear in a bacta tank, the recuperative fluid-chamber Luke Skywalker takes a dive in The Empire Strikes Back. (Entertainment Weekly)
