The show, hosted by comedian Chelsea Handler, was kicked off by a performance from Eminem and Rihanna.

Emerging on the dark stage, wearing a black hoodie and holding a gleaming silver microphone, he stared into the camera and ripped into the redemptive lyrics of “Afraid” on a set that paid homage to the place where it all began, Detroit’s gritty St. Andrew’s Hall, where a then-unknown Shady first made his name more than a decade ago in the dingy brick-walled basement during epic lyrical battles. Rapping the song’s lyrics over a reworked spare piano-and-drums remix, a hungry look in his eye, Em was surrounded by a small audience of fans for the first verse until he turned around and descended the grand staircase onto the soon-to-be-legendary 2010 VMA stage. Additional performances were made by Drake, Mary J. Blige and teenage pop sensation Justin Bieber.

Justin Bieber made his VMA debut with an outdoor performance in front of hundreds of screaming girls. Kim Kardashian introduced the Bieb’s performance by joking about her inappropriate crush on the young star. Usher took over the stage shortly after his buddy Bieber and of course put his dance moves to good use. Even the audience was dancing in their seats! Mary J. Blige and Swizz Beatz helped Drake give his first VMA performance of his song “Fancy.” B.o.B, Bruno Mars, Hayley Williams and Paramore for a long performance of favorite hits from this year. Lincoln Park even made the list of performers this year giving a remote performance at the Griffith Observatory. (OK! Magazine)

The show also featured a moment where country singer Taylor Swift sang a song believed to be directed toward Kanye West.

Swift signaled she was ready to move on from last year’s VMA fiasco with Kanye West. Swift issued the musical equivalent of an official pardon, beginning her performance with a video montage of West’s interruption and transitioning into lyrics that included “Who you are is not what you did” and “Today is never too late to be brand new.” West acquitted himself well in the night’s final performance, delivering an equally serious song that owned up to his gaffe with lines like “Let’s have a toast for the scumbags.” (Chicago Tribune)
