According to 40, Yeezy warned him about being subconsciously influenced by his sound.

“There are more similarities between me and Ye on 808s and So Far Gone than to Thank Me Later,” 40 explained in an interview. “Ye cussed me out one day about jacking his sound. ’40 I don’t think you should be in the studio right now because you might just hear my new sh*t and subconsciously steal my new sh*t and it wouldn’t even be your fault.’ I can’t even be mad at him because the last CD I listened to was 808s & Heartbreak before I started doing So Far Gone. I swear to God I haven’t listened to a CD since other than Erykah Badu’s new album which I love. That’s it. I try not to listen to too much music because I don’t want to be subconsciously influenced and he’s 100% right about that.” (Nodfactor)

40 also said while he may be slightly influenced by Yeezy, his focus is on making more R&B-sounding tracks.

“But at the end of the day I think that’s what music is,” 40 added. “We take influence from different people and we put it all together the best we can. Ye has been an influence to me but not too much. Not in my drum programming or anything. I just think he hit something for me on ‘Say You Will’ that I fell in love with. I think I’ve been running with it a little bit, I’m not afraid to admit that. But to say that I haven’t brought my own swag to it? My favorite sh*t is Jodeci. Ye doesn’t make f*ckin slow jams. I make R&B music. Even if I do take his sound a little bit I don’t think he’s done anything that sounds like ‘Successful.’ That’s me liking Jermaine Dupri throwback R&B records and 90s records like Ginuwine.” (Nodfactor)

In October, 40’s friend/producer Boi-1da questioned Yeezy for calling out artists for stealing his sound.

“Lol @ Kanye West talking bout stealing swag, when hes made a career of sampling records SMDH #TheAudacity,” Boi tweeted Friday (October 8).

“i mean dudes one of the greatest ever, but … smh”

“@ChristianoHo no beef, just speaking my mind” (Boi-1da’s Twitter)

Boi later came forward and denied using his tweet to try and spark a beef with Ye.

“The tweet was just speaking about the irony of Kanye Westyelling at 40 for stealing his sound. People took it the wrong way, and thought I sent a shot. But I’m saying Kanye made a career off of sampling soul records. If somebody takes a sound that you started and runs […] and does their own thing with it, you should be flattered about that instead of being discouraged… He’s a legend in the game, one if the best ever. People think I took a shot at him. I dont think that’s a shot at all. I have the most respect for him.” (Miss Info TV)
