Producer Swizz Beatz recently opened up about working on Drake‘s song “Fancy” and said Andre 3000 was originally planned to appear on the Thank Me Later record.
Despite Drake’s hope to have Andre share a track with himself and T.I., Swizz claims time restraints shelved the possible collaboration.
“Andre 3000 was supposed to be on ‘Fancy,’ ” Swizz revealed. “Drake had a group of people he wanted to be on it: Andre, Tip, this one, that one. But the deadline for the album rushed a lot of things. [Drake] can tell you the rest, but Tip just wound up being on it. Which I’m cool with, cause that’s the homie.” (MTV)
Recently, Drake said he planned on working with Andre 3000 for his sophomore album.
“I really tried to do a song with Andre 3000, but I think it was meant for my second album,” Drake said in an interview. “Dre is one of those people that needs you to do a little more. He’s one of those people that believe in his craft so much that he needs you to do more than just be over hyped or just famous. In his mind, I have to prove myself and the truth is, I do. That’s just being real. I have a lot of work to do, so I actually respect him for that. I think on the second album I’ll probably only have two features. I have a few people in mind and Dre probably will be one of them.” (VIBE)
Last fall, Drake said he wanted big collaborations with artists like Andre 3000 and Sade for his debut.
“I really, really wanna do a joint with Sade,” he revealed in an interview. “I really wanna get Andre 3000 on the record. And I really wanna do a song with Kings of Leon. Yeah, slowly, but surely [I’m trying to get the guest features]. We’ll see.” (Rap-Up)
In April, Sade explained why she did not do a guest feature for the rapper.
“I don’t think they have contacted me,” she explained in an interview. “I’ve never collaborated because I’ve always avoided working outside my safety zone — I can be exactly who I am and can fail or success within the moment. I feel safe working like I do. I wouldn’t want to work in a situation where I am expected to deliver because I think I wouldn’t deliver.” (National Post)
