Drizzy feels fans would ultimatley compare their project to The Throne’s new album.

During an interview with XXL for the upcoming December issue, Drizzy explained that he and Lil Wayne have decided to put their proposed joint album on the back burner, maybe indefinitely, because he felt fans would compare the project to Watch The Throne rather than judge it on its own artistic merit. “Me and Wayne scrapped the idea of a collaboration album,” Drake told XXL exclusively. “We just agreed that it would be looked upon as… It would be sort of this competition [with Watch The Throne]. I feel like it would get caught in this whirlwind of hype. [Wayne] agreed. We just said, ‘If we do it, we’ll do it down the line. But right now is not the time.'” (XXL Mag)

In March, Wayne said prior commitments would force their LP to get delayed.

“I’ve had ideas to do an album with T-Pain. We’ve got the T-Wayne situation going, so Drake’s a very respectable dude. He’s like, ‘I don’t want to disrespect none of those situations, so I’m just going to wait ’til you have a real good moment to focus on you and I doing an album.’ … And then you know my obligations to the Like Father, Like Son albums with [Birdman aka] Stunna. It’s like no disrespect to those. I don’t want to clash with nothing. I want it to be a year when [we] actually have a moment and we can do it. It’s coming up. Probably the end of the year if we work hard at it.” (MTV)

Last year, Cash Money Records’ Birdman said the album was still in works.

“[Drake and Wayne’s album] is very possible. Because Wayne works a lot and Drake is out there with us too. They’re gonna do a lot of recording together so I don’t see why not. And I have a solo album coming out at the top of the year called Bigger Than Life. Then we have a Father Like Son album that we’ll drop around Father’s Day. But I’m more into them. I want to see our artists be as successful as possible. They’re young. The bigger they are, the bigger we are. That’s my whole motivation now.” (VIBE)

Around June 2010, Drake broke the news of Wayne’s interest in doing a joint record together.

“I went up to Rikers, and me and Wayne agreed that there will be a Lil Wayne/ Drake album,” Drake told DJ Envy on MTV’s “Sucker Free.” ” … There’s some things I’m excited for in my life — I’m excited to go perform certain places — but [this project] will probably be one of the most exciting things in my life, because we make music on a different level. It’s just so fun, so comfortable. A whole album? To think about all the things we can do, especially if we’re gonna do 15 songs. Me and him don’t like to do 12, 13 [songs]. We want to do 15, 16. Yeah, Lil Wayne and Drake album.” (“Sucker Free”)
