Young Money rapper Drake recently discussed the mechanics behind his buzzing "Started From the Bottom" anthem and why his Nothing was the Same's first single packs more meaning than most fans might think.
Drizzy said his emphasis on letting the world know he did not grow up with a silver spoon steered the track’s creation and credited his hometown for influencing the single’s visuals.
“The gist of it was kinda the back story of my life,” Drake said in an interview. “I don’t really speak on it that much, which kinda allows people the opportunity to make up what they want about me.” Before rap, Drizzy was most known for his role as the wheelchair-bound Jimmy Brooks on “Degrassi: The Next Generation,” but in the “Started From the Bottom” video, Drake alludes that he once worked in a pharmacy to make his ends meet. “I just wanted to make it known that I did work really hard to get here and it wasn’t just a fluke and it wasn’t easy by any means,” he explained. On “Started From the Bottom” Drake wants to tell his story his way, plus rep for his hometown. “That was kinda the message behind it,” he said. “Obviously everything I do is for Toronto, that’s why the video looks the way it does.” (MTV)
A few days ago, Director X spilled the beans on the video’s eye-catching beauty’s identity.
“I’ve known her forever. For a really long time. Everyone in this video is from Toronto. It’s a city, but its a town at the same time. So that’s my homie. The way God planned it, she was the closest to set. She’s the hottest girl, but she actually lives closest to Hamilton. Hamilton is where we shot the airport for the flying scene, so just for scheduling we had to shoot the drug mart close to there because of production rules. The day of when we didn’t have anybody, we were just like, ‘Call Maria [Angelica Charuppi], she lives in Hamilton.'” (Complex)
Recently, the Young Money star hinted at an official remix coming together.
The song speaks volumes. “It was about the misinterpretation of me as a person,” explained the Canadian star. “I feel like I don’t say enough and people have their own preconceived stories about what I’ve been through. I’m just sort of excited about that song. It means a lot to me and my friends and what we’ve done to get to this position.” “Started From the Bottom” has already spawned remixes from Wiz Khalifa, Soulja Boy, and Machine Gun Kelly. The Toronto native released his glitzy music video last weekend, hours before the Grammy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles.
Drake dropped his “Started From the Bottom” video on Sunday night, providing the internet with some entertainment as stars lined the red carpet at the 55th Annual Grammy Awards. The video features an all-white dressed Drizzy standing in the back of a white droptop Bentley, during a blizzard. In other scenes, he works retail in a drugstore, flies a plane into his native Toronto and dances around in a club. In other words, standard Drake video fare. (Huffington Post)
