Young Money rapper Drake has revealed just how amped up he became after finding out his platinum-selling Take Care won “Best Rap Album of the Year” at last night’s Grammy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles.
According to Drizzy, he celebrated so hard upon finding out the news that he ripped his suit.
“We were watching it on the iPad, the pre-telecast and it kept cutting out and then it just cut back on for the moment, ‘Best Rap album goes to,’ and they said Take Care and I almost said ‘Oh, I didn’t [win],’ it almost didn’t even sound like my album and then we just started going nuts and we got out, literally in the street, blocked cars, we all hugged, and then when we got back into the car, I realized I had torn my suit. So I stopped at a hotel, told the tailor to meet me there and she sewed up my suit.” (FUSE)
No easy task, Drake defeated a slew of high-profile artists to win “Best Rap Album.”
Drake’s “Take Care” took home the Grammy for Best Rap Album at the 2013 awards, beating out Lupe Fiasco‘s “Food & Liquor II,” Nas‘ “Life Is Good,” The Roots‘ “Undun,” Rick Ross‘ “God Forgives, I Don’t” and 2 Chainz‘ “Based on a T.R.U. Story.” Nas was probably the slight favorite in pre-awards speculation, if only for his reputation as a classic rapper. Last year, Kanye West’s “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” took home the award. (Huffington Post)
A few years ago, Drizzy spoke on the significance and what it meant to land a Grammy nod.
“To get any type of Grammy accolade or anything, it’s cliche but it’s a dream come true in the literal sense, that thing you have between sleeping and waking up. That time spent I used to think about being on the stage and being able to thank the people that have done so much for me in my life. And I remember the first time I went to the Grammy Awards and I looked at the set up of it at The Kodak Theater and it was like man, this is very similar to the dream I’ve been having since the ‘Degrassi’ days. I’ve been having this dream, I never knew where it was and it never really specified what the award was, but I knew it was a night I could let the people know–the people in my life know–how much they have done with me. To have four opportunities to have that chance is incredible.” (Global Grind)
The Young Money star used last night’s festivities to announce his upcoming third album title.
“I just won a Grammy [for Best Rap Album]. I think music, it’s a process we all go through. It’s an evolution. You’re constantly figuring out what works for you. Should you direct your own videos? Should you be more involved in certain aspects? With Take Care, I really found myself, found my stride. I’m excited to continue on with the new album, the album is titled Nothing Was The Same. I’m just excited about life in general.” (E! Online)
