Ice Age dominated its competition, which included Amazing Spider-Man and Ted, to debut at number one.

20th Century Fox can chill out now, as the fourth installment of the studio’s animated “Ice Age” franchise easily debuted in the No. 1 spot at the box office this weekend. “Ice Age: Continental Drift,” the only new movie to hit theaters nationwide this weekend, opened with a solid domestic sum of $46 million, according to an estimate from Fox. The 3-D picture reunites the series’ beloved band of prehistoric mammals and features a number of celebrities in its voice cast, including Queen Latifah, Nicki Minaj and Ray Romano. (Miami Herald)

The flick has also generated big bucks in the overseas markets.

There has now been a decade of “Ice Age” films, allowing the characters voiced by Ray Romano, Queen Latifah and John Leguizamo to become increasingly familiar to audiences, particularly international ones. The film had already done robust overseas business ahead of opening in the U.S. This weekend it earned $95 million internationally, bringing its overseas total to $339 million. The “Ice Age” franchise has now surpassed $2.2 billion worldwide, and the studio expects “Continental Drift” to equal the global total of the last installment, 2009’s “Dawn of the Dinosaurs,” which took in $886.7 million. Heading into the weekend, both Nicki Minaj and Drake encouraged fans to check it out.

“ICE AGE 4 today!! Can’t wait to see it. I feel like I gave my mammoth a silky Leon Phelps voice. Enjoy kids.,” he tweeted July 13th. (Drake’s Twitter)

Ice Age: Continental Drift also stars music entertainers Jennifer Lopez and Ester Dean.

Nicki Minaj and fellow Young Money emcee Drake are hitting the big screen together for the first time. However the twist is that the two will not appear as themselves but as two wooly mammoths in the 3D animated film “Ice Age: Continental Drift,” hitting theaters July 13. The Queens rapper’s character is a wooly mammoth named Hailey, while Drizzy also plays a mammoth, by the name of Ethan. The two emcees appear in the beginning of the film as main characters Manny, Diego, and Sid embark on an adventure after their continent is set adrift. The prehistoric film stars Jennifer Lopez, Aziz Ansari, Queen Latifah, and Ester Dean. (RapFix)
