Dr. Dre’s Surprise Appearance Pays Off In Big Way

Rap mogul Dr. Dre may be a genius behind-the-scenes but he turned out to be a key contributor to the University of Southern California's football team after they pulled off a stunning win against local rival Stanford Saturday (November 16) night.

Footage of the Doc giving USC football players a pep rally talk before Saturday’s game has surfaced online.

“He’s someone who grew up not too far away from this campus–only a few miles away. This is the one and only DR. DRE.” The USC football players who were in attendance in that room were probably expecting some famous alumnus rather than the famed producer. So the team was understandably surprised when Dr. Dre came waltzing into the room after C. L. Max Nikias the school’s president, introduced him. Dre didn’t say anything all that inspirational other than the standard “I’ve been a longtime fan of this team” and “Good Luck.” Still, this is greatness in the flesh here. And yes, the producer still looks pretty big even beside college football players. Lane Kiffin is probably at home shaking his fist at the video going, “Where were you when I needed you?!” (Complex)

The appearance reportedly went down Friday (November 15) evening at USC.

D.R.E., the rapper and producer behind classic album The Chronic and dozens of other hit records, is a Los Angeles native who grew up just a few miles from USC’s campus in Compton. He visited with the Trojans Friday night and offered words of support prior to Saturday night’s primetime contest with No. 5 Stanford. Dre isn’t the first notable figure interim coach Ed Orgeron has welcomed to the campus. Ray Lewis and Marcus Allen also spoke to the Trojans last month. Orgeron himself has provided a boost to the Trojans. Since taking over for Lane Kiffin in September, the Trojans are 4-1 and now 7-3 overall. A win over Stanford would be huge for the program. The Trojans managed to edge their local rival with a game-winning field goal in the remaining seconds.

Andre Heidari kicked a 47-yard field goal with 19 seconds to play and Southern California’s stalwart defense repeatedly came up big in a 20-17 victory over No. 5 Stanford on Saturday night. Cody Kessler passed for 288 yards for the revitalized Trojans (8-3, 5-2 Pac-12), who earned their fifth win in six games under interim coach Ed Orgeron. USC’s remarkable defensive performance included two fourth-quarter interceptions against the powerful Cardinal (8-2, 6-2), who followed up last week’s win over Oregon by getting knocked out of the national title chase and maybe the Rose Bowl race as well. Last spring, Dre and Interscope Records CEO Jimmy Iovine made a large donation to the University of Southern California.

The huge gift from the two who have been music business partners in the past will be used to create the Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy for Arts, Technology and the Business of Innovation. The academy will provide a special four-year program for undergraduates whose interests span several fields from marketing to computer science to visual design and other arts. It will include one-on-one faculty mentoring with professors from programs around the university and interaction with entertainment industry luminaries. (Fox News)
