Dr. Dre’s Protege Explains Botched Shady/G-Unit Record Deal, “You Can’t Have Too Many Bosses”

After making noise in 2009 for being the first artist signed to Dr. Dre, Eminem and 50 Cent's respective record labels via a joint venture, Aftermath's Slim the Mobster tells SOHH why he opted to solely roll with the Doc.

Saying he was initially set to have a deal with all three parties, Slim said the deal was too much responsibility for everyone involved.

“It was in the air for a minute,” Slim told SOHH about having an opportunity to sign a three-way deal with Aftermath, Shady and G-Unit Records. “It was like too many big heads. It’s hard. You can’t have too many bosses on one [deal]. I just decided to stick with Dre and make a name for my own company and that’s where I’m at with it.” (SOHH)

Slim also explained how the deal would have ultimately worked out.

“Everybody had a different job,” Slim added. “50 was my person to go door-to-door, like, ‘Get out here and roll to the shows.’ That’s what his job was. Dre was more to make sure that the music is right and Em was to make sure that lyrically, everything was where it was supposed to be. That was the thing that we were shooting for. I’m actually anticipating working on this record with Marshall [Eminem] for my [upcoming] album.” (SOHH)

Last week, Dre revealed his intent to primarily center his focus on Slim and Aftermath artist Kendrick Lamar.

“I am never going to give music up,” he said. “Music is like air to me, [music] is like oxygen, so I am always doing that. As soon as I get back to Los Angeles, I am back in the studio doing my thing. I have a couple of new artists that I am excited about, Kendrick Lamar and Slim The Mobster. These are the next two artists, and these are probably my final two artists that I am going to be working with at least for the next couple of years. I am going to devote all my attention to them and make sure their sh*t comes out the way it should be. I am just having fun with life right now!” (Global Grind)

In July 2009, reports of Slim’s signing to G-Unit, Shady and Aftermath Records emerged online.

“I’m not even focused on my album right now,” Slim said in an interview. “I’m all about his album. ‘Cause the better I do on that, the better it is for the situation with my album.” After getting the co-signs from the big homies Dre and Em, 50 Cent was the next to jump onboard behind the young rapper. Now, Slim Da Mobster is the first artist signed to all three artists, representing G-Unit/Shady/Aftermath. (MTV)
