Famed producer Dr. Dre has confirmed speculation that a new Snoop Dogg collaboration called “Kush” was a leaked song off his highly-anticipated Detox album.
In addition to the leaked track, Dre updated fans on the status of Detox.
“I see the finish line right now. I’m wrapping it up. I need about two or three more songs and hopefully I’ll start the mixing process at the end of next month. And from that point I’m about 30 days out…I felt like I was doing it more out of obligation as opposed to just really feeling it. As of last year, I’ve been really feeling where it’s going and I think I’m ready. Hopefully, I won’t disappoint…There was a version of [‘Kush’] that leaked that I wasn’t really happy about, so we’re gonna go on and push it and put it out because everybody seems to like it. I just thought that the content of it, it’s about weed smoking, and I don’t want people to think that that’s what my album is about. This is actually the only song with that type of content in it. It’s not a representation of what the album is.” (Rap-Up)
Dre’s “Kush” record began to circulate across the Internet yesterday.
Dr. Dre’s long-awaited Detox album may have taken a step closer to reality Monday night, when a new song called “Kush” popped up online. The track, which features Akon and Snoop Dogg, is rumored to be a contender for Detox’s first single. Hardly a break from form, the midtempo “Kush” features several Dre staples: a vocoder, a repetitive piano hook, a lazy beat, a marijuana theme (with an “inhale/ exhale” hook) and of course Snoop, who weighs in with some classic if familiar lines (“I’m Bob Marley reincarnated, so faded” (Rolling Stone)
After his Jay-Z collaboration “Under Pressure” leaked last summer, Dre expressed his frustrations with hackers.
“I’m not mad at the fans. I’m mad at the person that leaked the sh*t. I have no idea how it got out. It’s not even worth looking to see who did it. It happens. The most painful part about it is that I’m passionate about what I do so people should hear it in the right form…Somebody actually hacked into our emails, so that made our red flags go up. We’re in a new age and that’s a sign, ‘Wake up motherf*cker.’ You have to be more careful with your sh*t. That’s all there is to it. I know what’s up now.” (VIBE)
In September, Dre said Detox would feature fresh, non-leaked tracks.
“It’s no leaks that came out that are going on the record,” Dre promised in an interview last week. “I got hard new sh*t. I had a little bit of a leak in my security and what have you but I got new sh*t coming and trust me, it will not be anticippointment, you know what I mean? Y’all n*ggas gonna love this sh*t. Yeah!” (AMW DJ IRoc)
