Fox’s “Empire” is going through a rough patch. The popular TV show has suffered a series low in ratings following Wednesday night’s broadcast.

According to reports, the show managed to win the night but suffered unusually low viewers with its latest episode.

“Empire” hit a new series low in live-plus-same-day ratings on Wednesday night for Fox, while the network’s event series “Shots Fired” remained steady from last week. According to Nielsen data, “Empire” pulled in a 2.2 rating in adults 18-49 and 6.3 million viewers, which represents approximately an 8% dip in the demo from last week and 9% in total viewers. Last week, “Empire” suffered a slight blow in overall ratings.

Still the highest-rated show of the night (though by thinner margins than usual), Fox’s hip-hop drama was down 14% from last week’s winter break return to hit a series low. For a declining blockbuster like Empire, which has seen more than a few lows in its current third season, to put blame on its lead-in is thin gruel; the fact is the second week of Shots Fired (1.0/4) saw the limited series go down just a tenth from its March 22 debut. A week prior, “Empire” enjoyed a huge viewership in its season three return.

Empire ruled the night in its return to Fox’s lineup, clocking a 2.8 demo rating, which was up a notch from the 2.7 logged by its fall finale in the 8 PM hour back on December 14, and up 12% compared to its last fall original in its regular timeslot (2.5) last December 7. But Empire tumbled a precipitous 42% from its year-ago spring return, when it registered 4.8 at 9 PM on March 30, 2016, according to Nielsen’s fast-national stats. (Deadline)

In January, “Empire” received the green light for a fourth season renewal.

Empire was renewed for a fourth season by Fox, the network announced at the 2017 Winter TCA Press Tour on Wednesday. In December, Empire’s fall finale, which aired an hour earlier at 8 p.m. to help launch co-creator Lee Daniels’ new show Star, garnered 7.57 million viewers. The decision to renew the musical drama was surely a no-brainer for Fox, as it’s TV’s no. 1 broadcast drama, a title its held for the last three seasons in the all-important adults 18-49 demo. (E! 1. The cross-over move turned off its base audience. Although I liked the Simple Song duet, personally, the rock-out stuff was a little over the top.

Need to get back to Freeda Gatz and Serria McClain, and keep the street cred, not high-society or cross-over stuff. Jussie’s slower music, and protest themes in general that are current also play well.

Also think the gay male sexual contact is a bit too much for mainstream black – try a lesbian scene first or stick to subtleties rather than overt sexual contact.

    • That is not it. Too much male on male is that what you came up with?? It’s only Jamal that is gay and 1 or 2 of his boyfriend. And yes you are homophobic.

  2. Empire is a really great show.
My belief is that viewers are loosing interest because it’s not on the air long enough.
There is not enough episodes to keep viewers watching. Three or four episodes then off the air four or five months is ridiculous. I love the show, but if it continues to air the way it has been I will stop watching it too!!! Increase to a regular season or you’ll end up cancelled.

  3. You do realize that empire is lucious & cookie Lyon and cookie & lucious Lyon is empire. If you take out your heart you won’t live no more. Same with empire you’re taking out the most important parts and putting in something that viewers will lose interest. I’m not saying I don’t like it. But it’s something new to get used to. I hope that cookie git her A game. And the whole male on male affection is too much. I’m all for gay pride but to see it is not my cup of tea. And Andre is starting to fall deeper into the Lyon side he might just be just like his daddy.

  4. I liked empire at first but its way too much stuff going on. Is lucious a gangster, rapper, businessman, etc. Cookie is hood one hour and mamma the next even though i like all characters just too much to digest. Jamal is kinda consistant with his character, but his doing drugs one day shot the next. Andre is confusing into God, bipolar, lost his wife, now he’s a gangster. shit i could go on but the show messy. No consistency in characters. Lol only that lawer. love that dude haha

  5. Just lost interest…the plot is boring with no end in sight…boring boring boring
Music is better this season though.

  6. Too much and have no problem with the happy stuff but waaay too much that I want to see. I’ve shut it down and done. Unfortunate cause I kind of liked it.

  7. Love the show, need to get rid of Jussie Smollett character Jamal his intimate scenes with men is causing that show ratings to dip very, very low. 50 cents is right it is time for Jussie to go his character is getting boring and tired with that gay crap. Hurry up and put him with a woman or Empire will continue to do poorly.
