Incarcerated rapper DMX has weighed in on today’s rap game and his lack of inspiration from seeing some of the artists making BET’s “106 & Park” Top 10 list.
Although largely unimpressed, X did say he is rocking with Young Money’s Nicki Minaj.
“I’m not gonna disrespect anybody or shout anybody out, but it’s sad the sh*t I’m seeing here,” X said in an interview. “All we got is ‘106 & Park’ in jail. And it’s like ‘wow, this is the Top 10?’ Like really? I know it’s really not the Top 10, but it’s their Top 10. D*mn yo, that’s not a good look. Not a good look at all. I do like Nicki Minaj–how she getting at ‘em. Haven’t heard the album, but the couple of singles I’ve heard–‘Did It On Em,’ you know what I’m saying? That ‘Boom boom boom.’ Some sh*t, “Bang”–whatever. I like her style. And [Jadakiss] got a new joint too that I’m feeling.” (VIBE)
Recently, Cash Money Records’ Birdman talked about the lack of competition these days.
“When I look around, through my years and my time, you know, the game, it was a lot in the field, a lot of people doing it,” he says. “And I look around, and it’s like, where the f*ck did everybody go? I ain’t never understood that, but the game like that sometimes, that muthaf*cka’s gon’ keep ya or it’s gon’ leave ya. It’s all on you.” (XXL Magazine)
M.O.P.’s Billy Danze recently hit up SOHH and shared his outlook on the current state of rap.
“If you want to listen to four people, you buy one person’s album and everybody’s happy,” Danze explained. “Fortunately, we were able to come into the game listening to Kool G Rap and Rakim, KRS-One, those guys that showed us it was cool to be different and cool to be creative and actually put you on to a record. Hip-hop is always here. As long as M.O.P. is here, KRS-One, Rakim, all of us, we always got your back.” (SOHH)
In the spring, fellow New York rapper Prodigy said he was optimistic toward the rap game.
“It’s in a good place man,” P said referring to hip-hop. “Any time you’ve got a whole bunch of competitors it only steps up thequality of the sh*t that’s out there. How are you going to shine and stand out with all this new sh*t that’s happening, and all the heavy competition in the game? What’s going to make you so special? So it makes you work harder to prove that you deserve what you’ve got, prove that you deserve your sh*t. You’ve got to earn what you’ve got. So that’s how I see it. It just makes you work that much harder.” (Complex)
