Maricopa County Sherrif Joe Arpaio has also confirmed the arrest.

Simmons was booked into a Phoenix jail late Tuesday afternoon and was isolated from other inmates, sheriff’s officials said. “We would hope that he is finally sent to prison,” Arpaio said. “We’ve arrested him five times already. How many times do you have to violate the law?” (ABC News)

Initial reports suggested his arrest was related to drug addiction.

DMX was arrested earlier today in Arizona — and now his lawyer is reaching out to the one man who he believes can save him … Dr. Drew Pinsky. The details of the arrest are unclear — but the rapper’s lawyer Gary Jenkins tells us “He’s been battling addiction for some time and he’s in need of treatment.” Jenkins also tells us, “We’re hoping that maybe Dr. Drew might be able to help him.” (TMZ)

He was released from a 90-day prison stint last May.

DMX spent time in jail in 2009 on charges of drug possession, animal cruelty and theft, stemming from various arrests in 2008. After his release in May 2009 he was sentenced to 18 months probation for verbally threatening a guard during his stint in prison. (Fox 23 News)
