We The Best's DJ Khaled has stepped forward to clear the air on publicly proposing to Young Money starlet Nicki Minaj and what his back-up plan is if she does not accept.
Despite the widespread doubt, Khaled said his proposal is fully legit.
“I’m at a point in my career, you got to understand, I ain’t a young boy anymore,” Khaled said in an interview. “I just had to be honest. I’ve always liked her, she’s my friend, of course, and I like her. It’s more than just a crush. I want to be honest — she’s out there hustling and I respect that. I can take care of her and not just that, she’s beautiful. … Of course I want to marry her. I’m sure there’s other people who want to marry her. I just felt like I want to be honest with her. … I love the girl, I like her. … If she says no, it’s all good. She’s my friend. She might not be ready for marriage. I want kids, I want a lot of things, you gotta be ready for this, but, I’m gonna keep it real, I’m going to tell her how I feel. … She might say yes tonight or tomorrow, she might say yeah next year. I’m never gonna give up. I don’t ever give up on nothing I do.” (Power 106)
Headed into the weekend, Maybach Music Group leader Rick Ross said Khaled is likely more serious than most people think about trying to marry Minaj.
“I see that it’s not planned, but I’m reading the small description underneath and it says he has a ring from Rafaello & Co, if I’m reading that correctly, that’s valued at about a half a million dollars. If you spend a half a million dollars, you’re dead a** serious. … That’s been my brother. I know he’s been infatuated with Nicki. I guess we all just gotta sit back and wait.” (Power 106)
The new proposal footage shows Khaled professing his love for the Young Money starlet.
“Nicki Minaj, I’m at MTV, I want to be honest with you. I love you. I like you. I want you to be mine. I’m here at MTV because it’s a world wide network and the only reason I’m not telling you this face-to-face is because I understand that you’re busy. I’m gonna be honest with you, I want to marry you. … Nicki Minaj, will you marry me? We got the same symptons, we both suffer from success.” (MTV)
Back in 2010, Young Money’s Drake said his mom actually believed they were married after pranking fans on Twitter.
“My mom was actually like, ‘What happened? How did you elope?’ ” the rapper, 23, told PEOPLE at the MTV Movie Awards Sunday. “But we were just joking around. I never thought it would get so out of hand…Ironically, I got a ring for myself, so people were like, ‘Aw, you got married, and you have a ring you’re wearing. People still think it’s real. I’ll look at a girl, and she’ll be like, ‘You’re a married man. You shouldn’t look at me that way.'” (PEOPLE)
