New York rapper A$AP Rocky recently gave his thoughts on hip-hop’s infatuation with high-end fashion lines and why the late Tupac Shakur is most responsible for a lot of today’s trends.

In A$AP’s opinion, Pac helped influence music rivals Notorious B.I.G. and Diddy to start flaunting expensive luxury clothing in the mid-1990’s.

“It all started with a man named Tupac Shakur. First of all, Gianni Versace said that he was the most beautifulman, like he was in love with Tupac. He first started like messing with Tupac by giving him clothes. He really admired his art and all of that. And that’s when, no disrespect, you saw Puff and you saw B.I.G. start wearing Versace after that. Tupac, he kinda did do it first. He was actually getting it for free. … R.I.P Pac, R.I.P. B.I.G. R.I.P. Big L.” (“The Breakfast Club”)

Earlier this year, Pac’s family members spoke on his close-knit relationship with Gianni Versace.

Tupac Shakur’s family members believe Suge Knight is dead wrong — the rapper couldn’t have been a homophobe … because he was GREAT friends with Gianni Versace. Suge has been on a media blitz recently … telling multiple radio stations 2pac ended his professional relationship with a famous hip hop star because Suge believed the rapper was a gay man. But sources close to the Tupac estate tell TMZ … the Shakur family feels very strongly that Suge’s claims are “totally false” … and point to his friendship with the famous designer Gianni Versace, who was an openly gay man. In fact, Tupac reportedly participated in a Versace fashion show in Italy back in 1996 … and even rocked a Versace suit on the catwalk. (TMZ)

Renowned Italian fashion designer Donatella Versace recently spoke on the late Notorious B.I.G.’s love for the line prior to his 1997 passing.

“I think Biggie was amazing. He came to my shows in Paris many times, and we’d see each other often. He always used to talk so nicely about my family. I think he was so smart, so intelligent. He had such a mind. So I loved what he was doing and how he was giving people a way to know about Versace–I do think he was giving people a way to know about Versace–I do think a lot of people started to know about Versace because of him.” (The FADER)

Recently, A$AP Rocky came to iconic rapper Lil Wayne‘s defense over his dicey choice in clothing attire.

“People can say what they want about him with the way he dresses. I hate the way he dresses. I’m keeping it 100 with you. It’s very tacky at times. But that’s what he chooses to do. Get off his d*ck! If that’s what he chooses to wear, OK. At least he’s not wearing it ’cause he saw some other lame motherf*ckers wearing it. That’s when I don’t respect it. He’s doing him! Maybe it doesn’t work for you, but it works for him. So we need to get off his d*ck and let that man be legendary.” (Complex)
