Diddy, Jennifer Hudson & Beyonce Snag Trophies At 40th NAACP Image Awards

Jennifer Hudson, Diddy, Beyonce, Jamie Foxx and others were honored with trophies at Thursday (February 12) night’s NAACP Image Awards in California.

Leading the evening with the most nominations, Hudson was rewarded with three awards at the annaul ceremony.

Hudson led with seven nominations ended up winning three individual trophies, including Outstanding Album for her self-titled debut and Duo, Group or Collaboration for her duet with Fantasia on “I’m His Only Woman.” “Now don’t start me to crying again, y’all,” a visibly touched Hudson, who won her first Image Award for acting two years ago, told the standing ovation-prone audience. “Oh my God, it always feels like home coming here. Thank you all so much for all of your amazing support.” (E! Online)

The evening was highlighted with various wins by popular artists.

Beyonce, who opened the show with a wind-swept rendition of her song “Halo,” won the female artist category. The Secret Life of Bees won for motion picture. Sean “Diddy” Combs picked up the TV movie actor trophy for his role in “A Raisin in the Sun.” Jamie Foxx won the favorite male artist award. (Associated Pess)

Hip-Hop mogul Russell Simmons was also honored at the event.

Simmons was given the Vanguard Award, presented to an individual or group who raises awareness of racial and social issues. He said: “I discovered that giving made me happy. “As you get older, that’s the easy route, so it’s always been such an easy thing. It seems kind of crazy to be honoured for it.” (BBC News)

Various artists resorted to their Twitter accounts to give a play-by-play of their reactions including The RootsQuestlove who focused on the ceremony’s co-host, Halle Berry.

“Watching Halle’s udder’s on naacp awards. YEOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW,” Quest wrote unmodified. “Is it disturbing that i recognized the “background music” when the nominees were read on the NAACP Awards was also used….in a porno?” (Twitter)

Awards were also handed out to actors and actresses.

Taraji P. Henson won supporting actress for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and Columbus Short earned supporting actor honors for Cadillac Records. The Secret Life of Bees won outstanding film of 2008. Will Smith and Rosario Dawson were named outstanding actor and actress for Seven Pounds. “Grey’s Anatomy” won outstanding drama series. Hill Harper of “CSI: New York” earned outstanding actor in a drama series. Taye Diggs was named supporting actor in a drama series for “Private Practice,” and Angela Bassett won supporting actress for “E.R.” “Tyler Perry’s House of Payne” received four honors. Tracee Ellis Ross won for outstanding actress for the sitcom “Girlfriends.” (Los Angeles Times)
