Bad Boy Records CEO Diddy has shared his reaction to former artist Trevell "G. Dep" Coleman confessing to a murder dating back to the early 1990's and what impact drugs had on his life.
Speaking with journalist/radio host Elliott Wilson Wednesday (December 22), Diddy opened up about Dep’s situation.
“You could always feel that if you knew G. Dep, and I can’t say it was that, maybe something was troubling his soul,” Diddy explained in the interview. “‘Cause he was real quiet. He’s the type of guy who wouldn’t hurt a fly. I don’t know what happened in that instance but he did the right thing and manned up to it…He had a real bad drug problem and that could have caused the situation. As a person, that wasn’t nothing that he would do. Drugs sometimes make people slip up and make mistakes…Dep was definitely one of the favorite artists I signed to Bad Boy. That’s something I really wanted to work out, but that was just like he had personal things he was dealing with and we tried our best with that.” (Shade 45)
Indicted yesterday, Dep faces 25 years behind bars for his role in a 1993 murder.
A rapper who turned himself in to police for a 1993 fatal shooting in East Harlem — apparently to clear his guilty conscience — was indicted on a second-degree murder charge Tuesday. The rapper G-Dep, whose real name is Trevell Coleman, admitted to shooting John Henkel at East 114th Street and Park Avenue when he was 18 years old on Oct. 19, 1993, his lawyer said. He is next schedule to appear in court on Jan. 13. He faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted. (DNA Info)
A few days ago, Dep admitted to being unaware of the shooting victim’s ultimate demise.
Apparently when Trevell Coleman, AKA rapper G-Dep, came clean to police about shooting a man in the chest in 1993, he may not have known that he was confessing to killing a guy. He told the Post in a jailhouse interview, “I was surprised — for some reason, I really didn’t think that he died. When they told me, I was like, ‘Oh, I’m not going home after this.'” He has now been charged with murder, and faces life in prison. Coleman says he didn’t think much of the shooting at the time, but “started to wonder if all the bad things that happened to me in my life were karma for what I did…I thought that if I turned myself in, it might give me closure.” So despite the objections of his mother and his girlfriend, he told the police. Now he says, “The only thing I regret is that I have to leave my kids.” (Gothamist)

The career criminal — once signed to superstar rap mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs’ record label — was just 18 when he fatally shot a Queens man outside an East Harlem housing project in 1993, police sources said. “I shot and killed someone 17 years ago,” Coleman told a cop in the station house. As Coleman continued to reveal more details of the Oct. 19, 1993, murder of John Henkel outside the James Weldon Johnson Houses — things only the killer would know — the officer reached out to investigators at the 23rd Precinct, where the crime took place.
