With professional sports stars like Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal having put together their own hip-hop albums in the past, SOHH decided to hit up athlete-turned-rapper Deion Sanders for his take on balancing both forms of entertainment.

In Sanders’ eyes, celebrities often try their hand at passions or careers they never conquered.

“I think there’s a commonality that athletes and [music] entertainers share,” Sanders told SOHH. “Athletes have a dream about being an entertainer. We want to entertain in some form or fashion. And then you have a lot of [music] entertainers who dream about being an athlete. That’s why you see a lot of them playing in these celebrity charity games. They want to show off their athletic skills because they never made it into that realm and we never made it to the other side.” (SOHH)

He also cited sports stars like Allen Iverson and Bryant for wanting to fulfill their music dreams.

“It just so happens you have the notoriety and means to be able to fulfill some of your dreams,” Sanders added. “That’s where it came from. That’s what I did, fulfilled a dream. That’s what Shaq, Iverson, Kobe and many of the others did. I’m sure they just fulfilled the dream they had. Whether it’s with a basketball in your hands or a microphone.” (SOHH)

Over the summer, NFL star Chris Johnson talked to SOHH about launching his own Flashy Lifestyle Entertainment record label.

“Music is always something I wanted to somehow be a part of,” Johnson told SOHH. “I always wanted to be a rapper or be involved with the rap industry in some sort of fashion. Flashy Lifestyle and the artists that we have — have given me the opportunity to finally do that.” (SOHH)

In the early 1990’s, Sanders made a name for himself as a hip-hop artist.

One of the few professional athletes to make a bid for rap success,Deion Sanders recorded an album (Prime Time) and a pair of singles (“Must Be the Money” and “Prime Time Keeps on Tickin'”) in 1995 for Bust It Records. The recordings didn’t make much impact, and Sanders continued on with his famous sports career, where he became the only athlete ever to play in both the World Series (1992) and Super Bowl (1995 and 1996).
