[With Rap Genius recently teaming up with the National Music Publishers Association, rap veteran Consequence gives SOHH readers the scoop on how much he loves the popular lyric-decoding website. #ConsLoveIt]
I think Rap Genius is some really cool, creative dope sh*t. I really do. For somebody like me, it’s ideal simply for the fact that what might fly over somebody’s head can be explained.
I can take the “Bottle Girls” reference to Jason Voorhees and take the jpeg and provide a clearer understanding. When I shouted out Crystal Renay on the song she was like, ‘Oh, that’s what that means.’
I spit rap from a wittier perspective and sometimes I gotta chop words down just so people understand them better. Another thing about the “Bottle Girls” song is that it really went through a lot of channels before it got to this point because when I wrote it initially, it was really witty rap and I had to cut a lot of words to the fact that I’m rapping this about women to guys who are probably drunk.
So I knew this had to be digestible enough for someone who is seeing blurry so they can understand it. You gotta simplify a lot of it but I think when you have something like Rap Genius, you can really help people figure it out.
For people who love lyrics, it’s a dope outlet and for those who may want a better understanding through the annotations, it’s the perfect outlet.
