I think when you stop learning, there’s something wrong and you should be concerned.
I’m learning to be fearless about going out on that stage and laying it all out on the line and being so vulnerable because when you’re vulnerable and you’re really telling your truths, you’re not pulling any punches, that’s when you are at the core of the audience.
[The roaches in the housing projects scene], it was something special. I said to Chris [Rock], “I’ve never worked in this type of situation. I love you but the check ain’t keeping me here.”
We got so de-synthesized from these d*mn roaches, that the first time we saw it, everybody was screaming except Tracy [Morgan], he was like, “I grew up around these!” He wasn’t stopping but I screamed.
By the time I did my scene with Rosario [Dawson], one was crawling up the wall and I hit it with my hand and kept going because I would be d*mned if a roach was going to upstage my stage.
We were just de-synthesized. The crew people had to shake their pants out. They were everywhere. It was crazy!
Can you imagine walking up to [former “The View” host] Barbara Walters and going, “I need to take off work to film a movie. I know I’m one of the main co-hosts at the table and I’m not looking for another person to fill this chair but I need to take off work.”
Barbara Walters called me everyday and said, “When are you coming back?”
That was very difficult.
