Cassie Reflects On Debut, “After Things Went Awry I Had To Step Back”

SOHH recently caught up with Bad Boy singer/model Cassie to talk about her upcoming sophomore album, her quest to find her own lane and where she went wrong on her debut.

By her own admission, Cassie’s eponymous debut album didn’t do as well as she would’ve hoped. As a result, she was forced to figure out where she went wrong.

“After things went awry I kinda had to step back and really look at my situation myself,” she told SOHH. “You don’t want to internalize things but you kinda have to look at them and figure out where you’re at.”

Cassie decided that she needed to spend some quality time with her choreographer and Ankh Ra, the vocal coach who appeared on Making The Band.

“I know I’m not blowing like Mariah or whoever else,” Cassie admitted.  “Jazmine Sullivan is dope as a vocalist. I’m not doing that. I want to entertain people and I want to perform.  That’s what’s really important to me.”

In order to create some performance worthy songs, the model turned singer hit the studio with a litany of top producers such as Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, Tricky Stewart, The-Dream and of course, Diddy.

“Of course I would love to go in with Prince,” she joked. “But certain things can’t be made to happen. I got to work with a lot of people that I’d never imagined being able to work with and I’m just excited for what it is. It’s a big deal to me.”

She hopes those studio sessions will yield an album that will appeal to a broad audience, both young and old. Some songs are intended for a teenager, while others are decidedly more grown-up. “There’s songs on it that are more sensual. There’s songs on it that are more mature,” said the 22 year old. “Everything has it’s own flavor.”

Promotion for this project kicked off with the single, “Official Girl,” which features rapper Lil’ Wayne. Cassie promised more exciting features on the album but she’s not ready to reveal them just yet.

“It’s a secret,” she said. “I’m bad at hinting and I’m really bad a lying.”

Cassie is hoping to wrap production of the album, which has yet to be titled, by Thanksgiving and is looking forward to a first quarter release in 2009.
