Months after being acquitted for taking the life of teenager Trayvon Martin, former Florida neighborhood watch worker George Zimmerman has found himself in handcuffs.
According to reports, Zimmerman’s arrest is related to a physical dispute he had with a woman.
Mr. Zimmerman, 30, was charged with domestic aggravated assault, domestic battery and criminal mischief after he and his girlfriend, Samantha Scheibe, had an argument at their home in Apopka, northwest of Orlando, said Chief Deputy Sheriff Dennis Lemma of Seminole County. Ms. Scheibe told investigators that she had asked Mr. Zimmerman to leave the residence, and that he had begun packing his belongings, including two firearms, before growing agitated and turning violent. During the violent incident, Zimmerman reportedly pointed a deadly weapon at his female companion.
Deputy Lemma said that Mr. Zimmerman had “broken a table and, at one point, pointed a long-barreled shotgun” at Ms. Scheibe, who said he had aimed at her for about a minute. Later in the altercation, the authorities said, Mr. Zimmerman forced Ms. Scheibe, who was uninjured, out of the home before obstructing a doorway with furniture. “He just pushed me out of my house and locked me out,” Ms. Scheibe told a dispatcher when she called for help. Law enforcement officials arrived soon after. (New York Times)
The notorious Florida resident will spend the night in jail before seeing a judge Tuesday.
Zimmerman, 30, was taken to a jail in Sanford, Florida, and faces three charges including aggravated assault, a felony, as well as two misdemeanors, domestic violence battery and criminal mischief, Lemma said. He is being held in jail without bond and is due to appear in court tomorrow. Samantha Scheibe, Zimmerman’s 27-year-old girlfriend, told police that at one point during a verbal altercation he grabbed a shotgun and pointed it at her, broke a glass table and pushed her out the door. Over the past few months, Zimmerman has made headlines for criminal-related incidents.
George Zimmerman, himself, is a wealth of material, ripe for parody. Since his acquittal just over two months ago, Zimmerman has stayed in trouble. He’s been pulled over twice for speeding, once on his way to a gun shop, and again for excessive tint on his car. He has also been accused of more serious crimes, including theft, for allegedly stealing from his in-laws to domestic abuse for allegedly threatening his soon-to-be ex-wife Shellie Zimmerman.
