Cash Money Records’ Bow Wow is not changing his mind after announcing plans to retire his rap alias after the 2014 BET Awards and defended the unexpected decision. #ChangeTheName
Along with acknowledging the announcement, BW also addressed the immediate reaction it had on social media.
“It’s a name that they heard my whole career,” he told Rap-Up TV at the ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Music Awards. “To me, it wasn’t really that big of a deal. I was laughing at the reaction that everybody was making it the biggest news in the world. It was just hilarious ’cause I was like, ‘Sh*t. I’m just using my normal name.'” (Rap-Up)
The rap veteran also admitted he had alerted fans of the possible name-change in his music.
He had been thinking about making the transition for some time now. “I always threw hints about it through my music, but for all my fans that grow with me, they know the name,” he said. “So for them, it’s really not a change.” (Rap-Up)
Bow Wow broke the news to fans via an Instagram post last weekend.
“ANNOUNCEMENT: After BET awards i will no longer go by Bow Wow! Im going by my real name “Shad Moss” we made alot of history as bow wow. Now its time for the next chapter and challenge. Bow wow does not fit who i am today. Ima father, business man, TV host, Actor, and rapper! Time for MR Moss to take over!,” Bow Wow posted June 22. (Bow Wow’s Instagram)
The rapper posted a video to let his supporters know the announcement was legit.
“Breaking news, man. After the BET Awards, I’m changing my name. I’m going with my real name. No more Bow Wow after June 29, man. Shad Moss is what it is. New era. New money. Let’s go.” (Bow Wow’s Instagram)
